Why philosophizing? Exercise 10 page 503 tells you that three vectors a, b, and c are such that no two of which are equal and all are different from the zero vector. In part (b) it gives you the further condition that (a.b)c = (b.c)a(the . signifies the dot product of vectors), then it asks you to "show that c and a are parallel". Obviously this is absurd as the following counterexample amply testifies:take a, b, c to be respectively the i, j, k.Notice here that i, j, and k are mutually different and none is the zero vector as required. Also, a.b = i.j = 0 , and b.c = j.k = 0 and consequently (a.b)c = (b.c)a = 0 , yet c and a are not parallel being k and i which are rather perpendicular. WHAT a SHAME !!!On page 27 the authors "define" the logarithm in the following way:log b (base a) = c <==> b = a to the power of c and nothing is mentioned about the positivity of a and b and the unequality of a with 1, niether in the body of the definition nor in the preceding discussion, nor afterwards.We all know that -2 to the power of 3 is -8, but we also know that log -8 (base -2) has no meaning!! The book is PATHETIC.

This text was a great asset coming out of high-school level maths and entering into college-level calculus. It covers necessary previous topics briefly and efficiently, providing an excellent reference in case you forget something or skipped it in your previous studies. The examples are useful and to the point; sections are brief and incredibly effective. This book has a more complete overview of algebra, trig, and calculus than my entire high-school education. It's very easy to look up a subject and quickly understand it, which is essential when working through multi-faceted problems later. There are several problems in the text which have inaccurate solutions, but that's fairly minor for the vast resource this book has been to me. This was my father's A-level book (in England) and I'm proud to say that it's now finding use once again.Most college texts are $200. For $1? Buy it! I can't recommend it enough.

Well, A-level is for High School, not really for college level. I agree with Adel Douba that the book doesn't point out necessary information, but most of the college text books in US never mention what you have pointed out! Hey, for high school, it is a pretty good book, don't you agree? You don't see any high school book mentions anything about log(-8)[base -2] has no meaning, neither any of them mentions the unequality of a with 1. This is for college level!!! Again, A-level is just for Grade 9-12 in most of the other countries.

This was a core text for many British A-Level Mathematics students. It is a well written and easy to follow text book. The major flaw in an otherwise super text is that it has several typos and the occasional incorrect answer to self-test questions. These errors can hinder a student's understanding of a concept.However, over a decade and a half after completing my A-level studies I still refer to this text when helping students grasp pure math concepts.

About 80% digression, 20% (if that) actual writing on the history of life. I am a layperson, but I honestly could not tell you what, if anything, I learned about early life from this book. Fortey seems far more preoccupied with the trappings of being a scientist than he is with the science itself.Buy this book if you want to know about the quality of the eggs served at Fortey's favorite bed and breakfast, "...the perfect bed and breakfast in a Tudor house with flag floors and improbable staircases. [The] breakfast was neither too much nor too little, the egg yolks were soft and the whites were cooked, the toast warm and cut into triangles on which to spread thick, home-made marmalade, and pots of tea arrived unbidden." (ACTUAL QUOTE from page 143 of Fortey hitting peak digression in a chapter on early terrestrial plant life.)I can not understand how this book came to be known as such a touchstone on the topic.

British paleontologist Richard Fortey has written a marvelously concise and erudite historical synopsis of terrestrial life from around 4,000 million years ago, when meteors seeded the planet with the elements, most importantly carbon, that allowed for the evolution of organic molecules, to around 25,000 years ago, when Cro-Magnon Homo sapiens founded interior decorating by painting animals on the walls of his cave living-rooms. Fortey's account necessarily leaves off with the beginning of recorded history. (Blessedly, the life forms "Benifer" and Michael Jackson fail to appear in the narrative even once.)The author hits the high points, including the evolution of single cells, the formation of bacterial colonies, the initiation of chlorophyll-based photosynthesis (that ultimately charged the atmosphere with oxygen), the specialization of cells into tissues, the population of the seas, the advance onto land, the greening of the earth, the separation of ancient Pangaea into today's separate continents, the Age of Dinosaurs, the advent of live-birth from wombs, the ascendancy of mammals, and finally the evolution of Man. For me, the most interesting chapter was on the apocalyptic cataclysm which ended the Age of Dinosaurs, i.e. the asteroid which apparently slammed into the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula creating the Chicxulub Crater. The volume also includes several photo sections that provide an adequate visual summary of the text.The time spans of Fortey's tale are almost beyond mental grasp. For instance, at one point the author states that tool making by hominids began about 2.5 million years ago. Yet the style of the tools, the "technology" if you will, then remained virtually unchanged for the next million years. After witnessing the dizzying pace of technological advancement just during the span of my own life, this stagnation for such an incomprehensible length of time is mind-boggling.I wish I had but a fraction of Fortey's knowledge of our world. LIFE should be required reading in every high school science program.

This is a wonderful book and very well-written. Fortey's elegant prose style and his sense of humor make it a joy to read! However, it would have been a much better book if drawings had been included in the text to illustrate more of the organisms and concepts he introduces. Also, the bibliography is very skimpy.

Like his more recent book Trilobyte, this book is well crafted. For the reader interested in the process of discovery by a scientist, I suspect that this book will satisfy. Sadly, I came to the book in a search for current information about the history of life on earth and was disappointed. The book drifts between stories of the author's paleontological expeditions and a discussion of theories of the history of life on earth. If the reader is actually attempting to learn what Fortey knows about that history he is left to riffle through the pages in search of information. There are some interesting discussions here, but unfortunately they are buried in chatty biography. In short, if you are interested in Richard Fortey's life, buy this book. If you are interested in life on this planet, keep looking.

After reading a growing list of books on biology, geology, evolution and ecology if somebody asked me to recomend to good books to get an understanding and overview on the history of life on earth and geology I would recomend him `Life' and `Earth' both writen by Richard Fortey. Fortey is a very talented writer, he uses a similar approach as did Stephen Gould by presenting a complex topic in an accesible way starting with a very concrete example. Both books are easy and fun to read but when finished the reader realizes he managed to grasp quite a few important points. Both books were a good start to continue further reading on more specific topics within the areas of earth sciences, history of life and geology. I do strongly recomend this book

An excellent history of life on this planet told in a very personable way. I finished it and have started reading it again. The author presents a joy of discovery that is infectious - a pleasure to read. This is an excellent book as a starting off point into the fossil record and has excited me to learn more and dive deeper. 6 Stars - oh, they only allow 5? Oh well...

Fortey really makes you feel as if you're there in the distant geological past. the descriptions are so vivid and the prose is absolutely lovely. Get it, get it, get it, cant say enough good things about this book.really lovely stuff.

Bought this for my mom, and she is still working in this book daily. She is addicted to it. the cross word on each page has 2, could have put one on each page {instead} , but the book would have been way too thick, if done so. Other than that, awesome. The words are easy to read either way.

I DID NOT FIND ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PUZZLE BOOK THAT I DOD NOT LIKE. LOVE THAT IT IS A BIG BOOK AND I CAN DO AS MANY PUZZELES AS I WANT AT ONE TIME. I STARTED ENJOYING IT AS SOON AS I RECEIVED IT. I KNOW THAT I WILL CONTINUE TO ENJPY IT FOR MANY DAYS TO COME. THANK YOU FOR A GREAT PUZZLE BOOK.

This is a super big book with word search puzzles I do a couple of puzzles and leave and come back to the puzzles I really love this book

This is a ridiculous book. There are nonsense words, inappropriate words and words that are incorrect in English. There are no themes to the puzzles, just random words. I am throwing it out

to be honest i bought this for my nephew who is in jail .he said it was great ! this was third of three he's received and he likes this one most of all . so here is 5 stars from my nephew.

Bought for my mother in law for Christmas. She loves word search puzzle books. This one ought to keep her busy for a while.

I love my job, my emails are brief, I know how long it takes me to shower and shave (8-12 minutes, depending on my vertical cut-off point).That night, I tore into the tough sh*t. And let me tell you, it is some tough sh*t. Money? Relationships? Achk. DONT MAKE ME DO THIS, SARAH. But I kept reading. Because, c'mon. You spent $20 dollars on this thing. It's just a book. Who raised you?So I stayed up until about 3:00 am. Most of that spent reading, but at least an hour spent staring at the ceiling fan and thinking about page 160.I finished the book on my flight back to my current "home" this morning. Between the time spent with my family and reading this book, this weekend has been life changing. Highly recommend to the well-put-together and deviant alike.

Okay, I get where the author was going with the book. I think it was lighthearted and helped with not taking everything too seriously but serious enough. I just think it needed some substance , something more than tips I could find online. I really had higher expectations for this book but I don't think it was worth it for me to buy.

I bought this because of the reviews. I got about half way through it hoping I would glean some good information. I can't say it opened my mind to anything in particular. Every other word was "sh*t" It wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest if there were actual good ideas or instruction. I think the high ratings are from people who are impressed with the language since there was no actual content other than babble. The book was complete SH*T.
