What a great book! For anyone who has ever debated their favorite teams "all time" list, this makes for a very engaging and thought through look at your Dream Team. This book was well researched and the author does a nice job of providing his perspective on the tough choices made by position. I especially liked the addition of the different lineups depending on the pitching match up for each team!

This is the best baseball book written in the last few years. Over 600 pages, current through the 2018 season, and a great price. Will be using this to create my all-time teams for my computer baseball game. Would love to see something like this in other sports.

Author Tom Stone establishes a solid, multi-faceted approach to selecting all-time dream teams for baseball's 30 franchises. As a result, Now Taking the Field is thoughtful, insightful and interesting.In the introduction, Stone, who worked on the book for 20 years, offers how his project differs from past all-time dream teams. Stone uses WAR (Wins Above Replacement) as a starting point for his selections. Stone provides a good definition of WAR. He also supplements WAR with W3 (a player's top 3 WAR seasons) and W/G (WAR per game).Stone, however, also uses traditional statistics, such as batting average, home runs, RBI and ERA, as well as the newer OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging average) and WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). He considers post-season performances and awards.In addition to selecting an all-time team for each franchise, Stone compares his picks with those in the past (one of the most interesting features of the book), selects starting lineups vs. left and right-handed pitchers, establishes a depth chart, lists players with WAR seasons of 8 or higher and selects a franchise player of all-time.Stone also acknowledges the PED era in his selections, choosing to take production numbers at face value. He does state if a player was suspected of using PEDs.Unlike some past selectors of all-time dream teams, Stone includes 19th century players. He acknowledges the challenge of doing so (different era, different rules). I personally think it's almost impossible to compare 19th century players with 20th and 21st century players.Stone chooses to select one all-time dream team per franchise. Thus, the St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles get one all-time dream team. I prefer separate all-time dream teams.This is an interesting 600-page book (each franchise averages 20 pages). But there probably isn't as much fodder for arguments as one might think. Fans may quibble here and there, but there are no glaringly questionable choices. Stone is thorough in his considerations for the all-time dream teams, and he seems to treat the different eras equally.Baseball fans, particularly those who are statistically oriented, will enjoy this book.

Now Taking the Field is book that can be read from start to finish or chapter by chapter. The research and insights that Tom Stone has provided as well as the overall depth of knowledge for each team are outstanding. After the Introduction, I read up on my favorite team and was delighted to hear names of players I hadn't thought about in years. I thought the author did a great job at presenting his choices for all time rosters. Even better was the comparison to previous works and where his opinion differed. My only complaint is that I felt the author leaned on a few phrases a bit too much.

Cheers to the author for giving us an incredibly detailed and interesting look at the world of the Romans prior to Caesar's reign. I don't remember ever learning in school any details about the Etruscan area of what is modern day Italy or the beautiful city of Veii, which lies only 12 miles across the Tiber River from the city of Rome. In the approximate era of 365 BCE - the city of Veii was much larger than Rome and appeared to be far more sophisticated and worldly. They held women to be contributing, worthwhile citizens, able to own land and make decisions without the control of either husbands or male relatives, something unheard of in the heavily male dominated Roman populace. While the interwoven romance between a Roman female and a Veientane warrior/leader was enticing - it was learning that world even existed. Some of the same gods/goddesses were worshipped - albeit under different names. But, where the Roman citizens were a sober, male dominated society - the citizens of Veii were fun-loving, free thinking individuals with a highly developed city infrastructure and a love of all things beautiful. For example, a Roman potter might craft a drab, unremarkable vessel for containing water, wine or food - while the Veii potter strove for beauty and fine quality in their works. The love story involves a very young Roman female from a well-respected family being used as pawn in being married to an older Veientane leader as a means of ensuring peace between the two cities. I simply can not stress this series is invaluable in imparting the knowledge of a different look at the Italy we learned about versus what really was and the learning is made enjoyable through the personal look of two people who grew to love each other without reserve - even though that was not the original intent. This is actually a series of 3 books, including "The Golden Dice" - #2) and "Call to Juno" #3. Consider this review as for the entire series - which I have now (sadly) finished.....one of those I did not want to end!!

I am a little picky about ancient history because I am a Classics major and have taught Latin for many years. I bought the book because it was on sale in the Kindle edition, and I was ready to be disappointed. I was won over about halfway through. It is much stronger in the Etruscan sections than when Caecilia is in Rome. The author's writing gets better as the book continues, and she is clearly more comfortable writing about Etruria than Etruscan Rome. If you love Rome, you may be put off by her unsympathetic portrayal of the early Republic. The characters are not well-rounded, and the dialogue seems stiff. When she reaches Etruria, this all disappears. I found myself amazed at the detail. Do we really know this much about the Etruscans these days? I have been buying books on the Etruscans to find out, and so far I've been able to find her sources for most of it. It has inspired me to read more about this fascinating people. My remaining qualm is the drug use described in the sections on religion. I have not found anything that even suggests it in the literature. I was also disappointed that it ended as a cliff-hanger. It would have been equally interesting if she had simply indicated that Caecilia's story would continue. I look forward to buying the sequel.

I admit I was a little concerned a couple of chapters in. The Wedding Shroud has a slow start in my opinion, and it definitely took me a little time to get warmed up and truly involved in the story line. However, once I made it a little further, I was happy that I gave it a chance.I love the author's depiction of the main characters, Caecilia. She's portrayed as a strong female, yet she still follows much of what is expected of a female during this time period. The author does a great job at bringing to life a period of time which I know very little about. I'm a huge historical fiction fan, but ancient Rome is not one of my top picks when choosing a book to read. I love how the author stayed true to history, yet gave the reader a story, not a textbook. I would definitely recommend this novel to historical fiction fans.

I very much enjoyed this book, as well as the others in the series. The violence is present as it is a time of prolonged war, but it is more referred to, than graphic, and where there is a graphic description it is brief and with purpose; the sexuality is there, including conflicting feelings about it from differing cultures, but it is mostly done tastefully. There is reference to rape and the threat of rape, but again, women were, and are, considered the "spoils of war." In the second book, there is more detail because a character is a prostitute, but again, I believe it is handled as gently as possible. It would not be a story true to the times if these things were excluded. I never felt I was reading a story that was based on gaining readership via sex and gore, even when t was referred to, or part of the story. It was all secondary to the lives of those it describes.
