Although there are a few typographical/grammar errors in this 56 page narrative of South America's premier pre-Columbian civilization, The Mythology and Religion of the Inca is a terrific, quick read.Illustrated with color photographs plus some black & white pics, this book will help enlighten readers as to how the Incan empire came to be so dominant and how they accommodated differing religious practices, while at the same tine, used it to bring widely differing social groups within the same umbrella, as it were.Comparisons, for perspective, with the similar methods utilized by the Romans, Buddhists and other governing groups shines a light to illustrate the concept. This book also discusses, lightly, the severe, cruel, and objectionable tactics used by the Conquistadors to subjugate the Incas. Lest some suppose the conquest was proof as to the wrongs of religious followers of the Pope, a book authored by a Bother of the Dominican Order, Bartholome de las Casas, namely, A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies, sought to put an end to the savagery then being committed. The account is brief, but is not excerpted into this book, although it is referenced and paraphrased. I wish it had been reprinted in this book, as Bartholome was clearly passionate. Read this paragraph to get a glimpse of the copy I googled:I once saw four or five of their most powerful lords laid upon these griddles and roasted ... but the shrill cries which were heard were offensive to the commander because he was sleeping. He commanded that they be strangled with a halter, but the executioner (whose name and relatives in Seville are known to me) was loathe to cut his entertainment short, so he personally stuffed gags in their mouths to prevent others from hearing their cries until they died when they had been roasted as long as he thought convenient. I was an eyewitness to these and innumerable other cruelties; and because all men, who had the opportunity, fled to the mountains to avoid such brutish and barbarous people, estranged from goodness and adversaries of all mankind, they bred fierce hunting dogs that would devour a native like a hog, at first sight in less than a moment. If on the rare occasion a native, irritated upon a just account, took the life of any Spaniard, the Spanish proclaimed a law that one hundred natives should die for every individual Spaniard slain.I should note that I feel this account is important so North Americans can better understand just how much more brutal, even savage, the Conquistadors were to those indigenous people whom they encountered, than was/were the invaders of what we now call the United States of America. Doing so does not whitewash or trivialize the destruction wrought by the US Army during the 19th Century.Despite the omission of Bartholome's brief account, I found a wealth of interesting information on the religious customs, and the history of the Inca, according to their own tradition, according to research conducted by scholars, and according to that which the Spaniards themselves observed. I only wish the a conquistadors had not destroyed so much.I trust others will find The Mythology and Religion of the Inca as interesting as have I.

Short, basic and elementary - maybe good for high school students. A thumbnail scratch on a fingernail scratch of an incredibly rich and complicated theology and culture. Scratch something else that needs it, and save your money.

A book that should be red by all. It speaks of a highly cultured nation, well within the frame work of the Inca. It had well established social services, rules and regulation, tolerance towards others. Mind you if you challenge them that was a different story. A book well worth reading.

After seeing so many programs on the Discovery channels, it was good to have a reference book at hand. Complete bibliography doesn't hurt, either.

Excellent !!!

A good text with everything you could ask as far as Incan mythology goes (more aptly called Incan State Religion, as I learned). However, the text is complex and required a lot of double reading for me (though I am a lazy reader, so take that for what it's worth). If you're a history guru like me though, I recommend it.

We all know ethics can be boring and tedious but it is something we all have to know and be aware of because it is a vital to acting in a professional manner. Of course, you are also probably assigned this particular book or are thinking of assigning it as part of the curriculum for an ethics class so I am going to weigh in as a student who bought the kindle version.I like that with the kindle version you can search for particular passages, which makes it super easy when you need a fast reference for a quiz. If you download the kindle app for a desktop you can actually copy and paste passages onto a word document and it insert a citation automatically, which I though was just fantastic. I can't say off the top of my head if the citation is APA or MLA (but who is psych uses MLA.... or any other dept besides English?? IDK but they should just use APA) but a citation is awesome either way. Plus you could just modify it if you need an in-text vs. a references citation. It even gives you "page numbers" which for the kindle are "kindle locations". This is the first text that I have ever gotten on the kindle and I am glad that I did.Now for the book part of the review.I like the book and how it is written. It makes it fairly easy to read and understand. I know we are all in grad school blah blah blah.. but its is still nice to not have to deal with overly verbose sentences or authors that keep making very concise, but tedious and difficult sentences to muddle through. Ethics is not just a collection of principles and laws, its almost an art, in that you have to think critically to be able to see something from all angles and nobody has time to do that AND deal with annoyingly difficult text. It includes the APA as well as NASP ethical codes and examples in each section of the application of codes which is nice. Now for the only "Con" of this review. We are assigned the case studies from time to time at the end of each chapter and with the kindle edition it can be hard to "flip" back and forth between the case study and the rest of the chapter. I think there is a way you can book mark it but I am too lazy to find out.... this also should influence how you perceive my "con" since it is probably the failure of me to take the time to figure it out rather than the fault of the actual book... and still its not the books fault either since that's a kindle thing.Either way... I can only compare this experience to only one other ethics book, a hardback (which I actually didn't read) and I much prefer this one in the kindle format.

I reject the notion that this book is outdated. While it is true to say that some more recent court cases have set new presidents, this book is still an impressive resource for starting school psychs. What you get in this book is a extremely solid foundation for ethical best practices in school psychology. Want to avoid litigation? Yeah. Me too. This book seems to be a roadmap to the tricky topics school psychs will have to deal with in their careers.

This Ethics book is spectacular. It is easy to read, clear, and to the point. The examples are interesting and not in the text, so if you need clarification, you have the option of reading an extra page or so. I actually enjoyed reading this.

Its ok

Product was exactly as described and arrived quickly!

Great book, used for class. Able to highlight in the pages without much of a ink-through. One of my pages did come torn though, but that is okay, it was just one page.

This is text book. If you need this information it's all here. It is well organized and would also be a good reference book.

For being a text book, I was impressed by how well the authors were able to articulate main points in an easy to understand way. I highly recommend this book for any school psychologist, from early to late career.

#205,815 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is an exquisitely written story of a loving, middle-class family’s once idyllic life in Kabul, Afghanistan, collapsing beneath Soviet rockets and later crumbling under despotism by the Taliban. In first person, the story described how Fereiba Waziri, pregnant with her third child, lost her husband, Mahmood.Fereiba had known loss all of her life, but with the loss of her husband, and her personal histories with loss, she was limited in her coping capabilities. Although hesitant and fearful, she realized she had to pick up the pieces of her life, and go on without Mahmood.Mahmood was a freethinker in their society. He and Fereiba had solidified their marriage with profound love and trust, openly discussing everything. Yet, Fereiba always respected Mahmood’s final decision in matters. However, she later regretted they had not moved to London earlier and, sometimes, I think, she made ill-considered decisions.Fereiba and the children were vulnerable and immersed in their grief. Although grieving, she had to remain calm and clear headed in front of the children. Her daughter, Samira, became mute, lacking the verbal ability to explain what troubled her. Her son, Saleem, at fifteen, was at the age where he was unwilling to share his problems with others. Inside, he mourned his father’s death. He felt confused, had ambivalent attitudes concerning his brother and anger towards his mother.Fereiba had to relearn the world without her husband. She fled with her children and infant son, Aziz, to safe houses in Iran before landing in Turkey.Saleem’s story is told in omniscient point of view. This is really Saleem’s story. Proud, and strong-willed, he refused to keel over to pity. His dreams became deferred. He had to mature quickly without the guidance of his father. In Turkey, he secured the family lodging with a kind, retired Professor, Hakan and his wife, Hayal. Saleem worked on a tomato farm to help with their savings. He even befriended a boy his age, but their friendship was short-lived because of Fereiba’s decision to leave Turkey. When the family arrived in Greece, while Fereiba cleaned hotel rooms, often Saleem provided food for them in ways he was not proud of. He discovered the dismal gloom of Afghan refugees in Athens. At night, males in their teens and twenties, slept in a park under makeshift tents. During the day, they scrounged for food from restaurants’ refuse or received sandwiches from aide workers. Refugees could not obtain asylum. They could not acquire jobs. Like Saleem’s family, they too wanted asylum in Europe and feared forced repatriation. When the Waziri’s had saved enough to reach Italy, Saleem and his mother were separated two days before their departure. He was arrested by police and returned to Turkey. Fereiba, faced with her deathly ill infant, realized she had to leave without Saleem.Several weeks later, alone, Saleem reached Italy, and became acquainted with the dark, purgatorial, underbelly society of Rome with its unforgiving, hardened criminals. Yet, he would not give up his dream of reuniting with his family. So, he made brave decisions a boy should not have to make at his age. But he was between adolescence and adulthood. He would survive.I enjoyed the story immensely. I gave it five stars.

If you enjoy the writing of Khaled Hosseini, I think you will also appreciate both of Nadia Hashimi's novels. I loved When The Moon Is Low. It is an emotional journey about love of family, freedom and country. It explores the limits of personal strength and determination as well as the bonds between parent and child. I did not want it to end. My only criticism is one that I am finding in many books lately. SPOILER AHEADBy the end of the book you are hoping for the emotional payoff which does not really come because the conclusion of the story is left to the reader's imagination rather than played out. That said, and questionable title aside, this was a very enjoyable book, one I highly recommend.

The story read well and held interest; however, the ending was a real letdown. Gave much information about customs, reasons for their travels and hardships when trying to relocate. It was as though the writer just put down her pen and stopped. I was very disappointed not knowing how each fared after their travels. Did not like to be left with the door shut in my face.

Was patiently waiting for the release of this book as her first novel I couldn't put it down. This started out with a bang for me and fizzled out a little about 3/4 of the way through. I did skip through towards the end and finally finished only to be left shacking my head. I would give it 3 1/2 stars and not a complete wast of my time but certainly not a favorite.

This story is simply told, in the voices of Fareiba, and her son Saleem as they leave a troubled Afghanistan for a better life in London. The story traces Fareiba's difficult life first as a motherless child, and later as a widow with three children compelled to leave her country after her husband is killed. Saleem's voice join in as the family begins its move. The story is heart wrenching, yet the characters too engrossing to make the reader easily put the book down. The kindness shown by strangers occasionally sweetens the bitter deal that life has dealt the family, and shows that there are decent people around. The story is topical, and gives a refugee's perspective on the current crisis making global headlines.

This was a selection for my reading group. I was really looking forward to it, as our group had read "The Pearl That Broke Its Shell" by the same author previously. I enjoyed the book and was emotionally unnerved by the treacherous journey that refugees were forced to traverse in order to flee Afghanistan. I can't even imagine putting my children into such a situation as was forced upon the Waziri family. The author did a good job of developing the characters and using the separate voices of Fereiba and Saleem. Even though I enjoyed it, I don't really consider it a book that I would term asmemorable. My litmus test of a memorable book is that it keeps me awake at night thinking about it and pondering the characters and story lines. Perhaps in my mind, I am comparing it to how I felt reading the works of Khaled Houssini and this book didn't compel me like Houssini's works did. I would recommend it for those who love literary fiction or Middle East fiction.

the book was excellent for the book report my grand needed to do

Even though we happen to be a Pagan family, any family would enjoy the history of the Autumn Equinox in this book. It's great to read what many ancient cultures did to celebrate the harvest and incorporate some into our modern life.Wonderful Native American Tale at the end. Buy with the Winter Solstice book. I wish they would come out with the Summer Solstice and Spring Equinox!!!

We have been reading this book over and over again at bedtime. My children are 5.5 and 2 and both of them love hearing about how different people around the world celebrate one of our favorite times of the year. As a bonus, it gives us all kind of fodder for unit studies! I can't wait till it's time to start reading the Shortest Day!

Add more to Thanksgiving by sharing the stories of other cultures and understanding different traditions.
