W is for Welcome: A Celebration of America's Diversity (Sleeping Bear Alphabet Books), by Brad Herzog

Review

Organized as an abecedary, this book celebrates immigration by painting a picture of the variety of paths taken by people who have settled America over the centuries. Letters of the alphabet are matched with concepts such as freedom, liberty, and heroes, which are accompanied by brief explications, terse quintains, and illustrations by a variety of artists. Herzog notes familiar aspects of history, such as the theory that Native Americans crossed the Bering Strait, the arrival of the Mayflower, and the work of Chinese and Irish immigrants on the Transcontinental Railroad. Also noted are the cultural contributions of immigrants such as Levi Strauss, Albert Einstein, and John Muir. But the most interesting aspect of the book is that it provides explanations of the less romantic elements of immigration: the push factors such as war, persecution, and poverty; the lengthy complications of the naturalization process; and the privileges of citizenship. Middle-school teachers might use these points as springboards to discuss the struggles of adaptation and controversy of assimilation. --Booklist

I'm a third grade teacher. We learn about immigration and migration in our class and this book is everything I hoped it would be. Each letter has detailed information and covers a range of topics, all around our nation's history, diversity and strength thanks to the those that came here and made a difference. We will refer to this many times throughout our study. The artwork is beautiful as well. I bought a second one for my colleague so she could have her own!

Obviously, well into the third century of a nation filled with descendants of immigrants, the notion that we should appreciate the challenges and contributions of those brave people shouldn't have to be a statement. But W is for Welcome handles the subject in a way that both educates and inspires. I love how the book covers not only the process (naturalization, the oath of allegiance, etc.) and the places (the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the White House designed by an Irish-American architect), but also the people who have come from elsewhere and achieved remarkable things (from John Muir to Madeleine Albright to the founders of YouTube). The illustrations are beautiful, and the poems and sidebars by Brad Herzog are well-crafted and informational. There is always the talk about the need for more diversity in books these days. This one celebrates a diverse nation.

W is for Welcome is the right book at the right time! As a nation we are grappling with recognizing the similarities and appreciating the differences among the people we meet each day in our schools, neighborhoods, and communities. This book does justice to bridging America’s history and the present. Brad Herzog’s words and the illustrations of the many artists provide a beautiful synthesis to create a message and content that teachers and parents will revisit again and again. As a title I teacher charged with providing family engagement opportunities at my school, I am planning a Multicultural Festival and W is for Welcome will be one of the featured texts in our story rooms.

An extremely relevant and necessary book for our country’s current climate. I thought it was well done as it used poetry and expository text to showcase our nation’s diverse population and celebrate the contributions & achievements of those who have chosen to make the United States their home. Must have for my classroom library.

Beautifully written and illustrated book about our country, immigration, and cultural diversity. Children will love to hear about how many different cultures and customs exist in our country. Short narratives about people, places, and events that shape our nations history and present day are featured throughout the book!

It would be easy for this book to have taken on a very different tone. Garrard Conley’s time with the ex-gay conversion group seems the sort of thing which could enrage you, once you come out of the mental chaos this pseudo-science pastiche of self-help jargon, addiction methodology and fringe (at least today, and for most people) fundamentalist beliefs. It could have been, arguably legitimately, full of bitterness, reproach, and mocking derision of the people engaged in this effort to reverse what most of us know feel (know) to be foundational qualities of each human being: who can provide romantic, spiritual, mental and sexual completion to us. Or more simply, who we love. But there is a quality to this book, perhaps a humility which comes from still loving the people he grew up with, the values they instilled, the faith that he had. He sums it up at one point by saying “it’s complicated.” I might say in addition, he shows it can be nuanced. You can love a person, but disagree with them. You can value a religion, but not all of it. You can condemn what a person does, but still see there is humanity in there, however deep. You can do this, but still hold on to and advance stronger beliefs: hypocrisy has no role in important conversations. We have rights, like being who are, being free to think for ourselves, to seek knowledge, and engage in debates about it. The events in this book range from a lifetime to less than two weeks of conversion therapy. I felt I understood his well intentioned attempt to try this, to respect his upbringing and his family, and how the attempt almost derailed his life. His mother’s presence is captured as a depiction of how parental love can both push a person toward what one thinks is right, but when seeing things hurt their child, rise up to defend them; his father’s similarly, how one can work to form a child, give them the knowledge and ability to prosper in life, but also to realize that if isn’t what they need, to accept that. I hope Garrard is able to make a happy life for himself, and kind of feel he will. I hope this book can help people who have experienced, as I have (not to his extent) the challenge of being gay in the gap between the generational change we have seen in our lifetimes. And in a way, by how he maintains love and respect for the people in his life who were unable to accept his homosexuality, help bring understanding between people who would instead be condemning each other as bigots or blasphemers. It is so much better to be in communication than to be right.

This is powerful writing. I could not put it down. The author's account of his time in the ex-gay "therapy group" is profoundly moving - as the days pass and the author reveals his increasing stubborn resistance to what the counsellors are trying to do to him I felt like cheering him on. Thank God I never had to undergo such a truly painful experience - at 76 now - when I faced my own struggle between the fundamentalist Baptist faith I was raised in and my own homosexuality the ex-gay movement didn't exist in Australia. But I share the author's pain when inevitably by accepting one's own sexuality one cannot help but wound the God-fearing parents one truly loves. Yes indeed, Gerrard, it's complicated. And the angst never truly passes completely. This account is the very best I have ever read of such a personal story. I thank the author for writing it and urge people who want or need to understand this issue to read it.

For every "Boy Erased" there is a "Simon vs. the Homo-Sapiens Agenda" or a "Call Me By Your Name".. Unfortunately, the latter two are fiction, while Garrard Conley's memoir is an unfortunate, if beautiful, reminder of the uphill battle many LGBTQIA+ Americans still face not only from society at large, but from those who should be most able to love and support them unconditionally: their families. In between vivid and searing passages describing his experience with the pseudo-psychology and half-baked Freudian analysis of Love In Action's conversion therapy, Conley includes beautiful, lyrical flashbacks to provide not only context for his decision to voluntarily enter therapy, but also to demonstrate his deep love for his parents and his willingness to put himself through hell and back for them. Many of these scenes had an extremely uncomfortable resonance with me, having also grown up in a Southern Baptist congregation. Perhaps the most illuminating scene in the novel is the event that causes Conley to walk out of Love In Action: when a counselor tries to force him to admit that he hates his father- the evangelical preacher who delivered to him an ultimatum: choose between conversion therapy or be disowned- he is unable to summon any anger for his parents. Through everything, he loves his family.Despite all of the anguish inflicted on the author, he has managed to deliver a tale that is at turns haunting and touching, yet somehow without vitriol, even though there is plenty of potential anger and blame to spread around to his parents, to his church and community, to Love In Action and Exodus International, or to society at large. Instead, his narrative ends with his mother, realizing the damage being done to her son, removes him from therapy. The lack of condemnation and or reciprocal hate in Conley's narrative is at once refreshing and disappointing. Were this not a true story, the lack of conflict at the end would seem unsatisfying... But as a recounting of actual events, the lack of anger and hate is refreshing.

I understand that writing can be therapeutic, and I am sympathetic with the writer. I don't think anyone should have to go through what he did. I just didn't think there was a logical flow to the writing itself. It was difficult to follow with how much it jumped around. I don't think everything that happened at LIA could have been told. I honesty didn't get what happened that made him feel suicidal. This is what leads me to believe that something was left out. Maybe the most painful experiences have been blocked out of the writer's memory, or weren't able to be shared because of a contract signed with LIA, I'm not sure. I was just never able to connect with the authors pain because of the constant jumping around or lack of experience shared or possibly both. I just had a difficult time pushing through this book.

Review

"Filled with compassionate, caring stories by a wise healer and scientist, this book will appeal to all who are interested in understanding how children heal."―Lynn Ponton, MD, author of The Romance of Risk"This book demands and deserves attention from parents, educators, policymakers, courts, and therapists. Highly recommended."―Library Journal, starred review"Perry has learned a thing or two about how not to raise a prospective sociopath.... He makes a powerful case for early intervention for disruptive children to prevent adult sociopathy."―Booklist"In beautifully written, fascinating accounts of experience working with emotionally stunted and traumatized children, child psychiatrist Perry educates readers about how early-life stress and violence affects the developing brain. He offers simple yet vivid illustrations of the stress response and the brain's mechanisms with facts and images that crystallize in the mind without being too detailed and confusing."―Publishers Weekly"I have never encountered a child advocate with a better mind, a bigger heart, or a more generous spirit than Bruce Perry. This book captures the essence of his insights and the heroism of his actions on behalf of children who have encountered the dark side of human experience."―James Garbarino, PhD, author of Lost Boys: Why Our Sons Turn Violent and How We Can Save Them"For many years, Bruce Perry's work has been deserving of our highest praise. This book is his crowning achievement, the ultimate combination of science and humanity."―Joel A. Dvoskin, PhD, ABPP, University of Arizona College of Medicine, and President, American Psychology-Law Society"In this harrowing but profoundly humane book, Perry and Szalavitz provide an all too timely, utterly engrossing account of traumatized children's lives.... Once I opened it, I could not put it down."―Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, author of Mother Nature: Maternal Instincts and How They Shape the Human Species"The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog is Bruce Perry's finest achievement.... Anyone who wants to understand childhood trauma and its heartbreaking consequences must read this book."―Andrew Vachss, best-selling author of Mask Market and founder and national advisory board member of PROTECT: The National Association to Protect Children.

A friend who is in the field of child development introduced me to Dr Perry's work. I read a lot of psychology books, always hoping to discover deeper meaning. Often, authors will be repetitive about their findings. Dr Perry's explanations were not such. He gave various stories with explanations to include neurological findings. I couldn't put this book down, have ordered his other, and am now more interested in his lectures and the work his organization does in TX.I am a child advocate and found Dr Perry's book very helpful in understanding trauma and how relationship dynamics play a role in healing.I would love to see Dr Perry author a book specific to his lectures on how society plays a role and what we can do to make significant changes. He touches on this in the end; the breakdown of the family unit and how other countries successfully "have both highly productive economies and provide high quality child care and lots of paid family leave." It would be wonderful to explore his thoughts on this model on a deeper level. This book is a must for anyone in the field of child advocacy and psychology or trauma. But for parents especially! Although this book provides clinical and neurological explanations, it is easy to read without losing interest.

Bruce Perry is a psychologist with extensive study and experience in his field. Although many adults, arrogant parents in particular, think they know what is best for their children under all circumstances, Perry shows that by looking at parenting from many angles, it is possible to provide children with better environments, happier lives and more upstanding and productive lives as adults. As the old meme goes, when children see adults show kindness to animals and the less fortunate, they internalise these lessons and apply them in their own lives. Brutal and violent parenting, on the other hand, can lead to bitter adults that see everyone else as their enemies. Having never been shown trust, they assume that everyone else is as untrustworthy as the brutes that "looked after" them as children and teenagers.A wise young mother, Mama P, exemplifies the ideal maternal approach to parenting. Children need what they need, and they should not be put into boxes of "toddler," "adolescent," "teenager" or "male" or "female" and treated according to social mores and stereotypes. No qualified doctor would think of prescribing insulin to a non-diabetic. Some children, starved for affection by callous or simply ignorant parents, will fail to reach their full potential, even when it comes to something as basic as growth. Young children cannot simply become physically healthy adults simply by ingesting nutrients. If human contact isn't there, toddlers will remain short-statured and could even die from neglect alone. A study in the 1940s found that over a third of neglected infants simply die. This was described in great detail in Failure to Thrive: a Practice Guide by Chichester and published in the United Kingdom.Perry details several riveting case studies, including a young girl who was raped, children who were fortunately rescued from the Branch Davidian cult, and one victim whose mother abused him to gain attention (she suffered from Munchausen's by Proxy). The trauma recounted within will no doubt be difficult reading, but this is one of the most important non-fiction books in the 21st century. Finally, we have empirical evidence that demolishes any last hope paternalistic despots have of defending their style of "parenting." Caretakers can say "suck it up" or "learn to love yourself" until they're blue in the face, but such attitudes only lead to misery and destructive self-replicating spirals.Children need to be loved before they can learn to love themselves.

I can't think of any kind of person I wouldn't recommend this book for. If you're a parent or work with children professionally this is a mandatory read. If you, YES YOU reading this, are age 14+ I highly recommend this book for you as well, and I am extremely conservative about my reading material. The two cons I came upon were that a few pages in a later chapter was confusing to read, it rapidly went back and forth through the timeline when Dr. Perry worked with a particular patient. It was a bit confusing but not unmanageable, on the upside this section was brief. Secondly, I felt not that it was short, rather I could have read an additional 200 pages without losing the slightest interest on the topics discussed.

I wanted to read the "stories" the book is about 20% stories and 80% research and explaining how the brain is affected by trauma, studies conducted, examples, and so forth....I want to skim through a lot of stuff. Some of the information is actual interesting and can be useful, but I bought this under the presumption of being able to hear about the stories. Its more of an informational text...great for a class, not necessarily for MY leisure though, but I will finish it.

This book is intense but so beneficial for anyone who works with children. It gives you a new perspective on behavior. I think it would be good for anyone planning on having kids or with young children. I wish I had read this 30 years ago.

This book provides insight and understanding to the often confusing experiences and behaviors seen in pediatric trauma related behavioral disturbances. It is an encouraging read especially if you are in the position of trying to help a troubled child. I️ would encourage anyone dealing with children to read it as it will change your perspective and application of its paradigm will enhance your ability to help a child heal with the promise of a meaningful and rewarding future.

I have learned so much about how the developing brains of children are affected after experiences with trauma and/or high levels of stress. As an educator, this information is valuable and an important reminder to not treat every student as if they have had the same experiences at home. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interacts/works with children and anyone else who may be interested in the contents of this book.
