About the Author

Valjeanne Jeffers is the author of the Immortal, Immortal II: The Time of Legend, Immortal III: Stealer of Souls, The Switch II: Clockwork (includes The Switch I and II), and Immortal IV: Collision of Worlds. Valjeanne was also featured in the groundbreaking volume, 60 Years of Black Women in Horror Fiction; and she was a contributing author during the Spelman College Octavia Butler Arts and Activism Celebration, organized by Cosby Chair, Ms. Tananarive Due. Her fiction has been published in numerous anthologies including: Steamfunk!, Griots: A Sword and Soul Anthology, Genesis Science Fiction Magazine, PurpleMag, LuneWing, 31 Days of Steamy Mocha, Genesis: A Black Science Fiction Anthology Volumes I and II, and Griots II: Sisters of the Spear. I enjoyed this book well enough to finish it, but not fully enough to venture to the next one. I spent alot of time lost in all the changes, character insertions, without warning scene changes that it took away from the overall delivery for me. The formatting needs to be edited so that there are some sort of breaks when changing from one scene to another. The storyline left me confused about the main villains true motivation for wanting to destroy the heroinne. The time traveling also left me with multiple questions, not sure from once sentence to the next where I was in the connection with the "present" story. I do however think the Author is very talented, and I will say that perhaps I was simply out of my element in this one, but this is my honest critique.

Just not my type of story, nor the way it was read. Others my find it ok, but I just could not get into it. The narration, I bought the Audible also, was sort of deadpan. At least seemed that way to me. It is not the first time narrator and book was not well paired.

I was able to read this book from beginning to end with an interest to finish it. The main character - a recovering drug addict- was interesting and real. The world the author painted with her words was vivid and interesting, an almost perfect utopia. With all that, I just couldn't get into the books as I would have liked to. I bought the second volume and will read that, if I like it I will get the third.

I will be honest i got through a few pages in the book and was COMPLETELY' thrown off I was too confused i didnt even want to finish! Not a good book if you cant follow the story lines and have to keep rereading

Valjeanne Jeffers must have been channeling Octavia Butler when she wrote Immortal. Well written, great plot, and interesting characters. The audiobook narrator gave life to the characters.

Fans of future fantasy are going to love this story. It's 3070 and Earth's been at peace for 400 years. Don't confuse peace with perfection, though. There's still drug addiction and bad influences. Karla's a former addict who's pulled herself up and is now working to help others. Two men are coming to her in her dreams: one, a warrior and another a demon. Life's just about to get interesting. Ms. Jeffers writes with beautiful detail. Her world is full of heart and a place I'd hope we could come to in the future.Every audible book requires a second section, though. Without a great narrator, the story doesn't come to life. Ms. Darla Ann Middlebrook has that voice. She sounds like French Silk Pie tastes. The good and the bad come to life with her voice.These two ladies are a match made in listener heaven. If I had any gripe, it would be that the story was over too soon!R. Kyle, May 2014

About the Author

Paul Robert is a journalist and photographer. He bought his first manual typewriter in the early 1990s after happily discarding them from his work environment. The first machine led to a second and became the beginning of a collection and a new field of research. The result was the Virtual Typewriter Museum (typewritermuseum.org), a newsletter, a biography of typewriter inventor George Blickensderfer, and two other books aimed at other typewriter collectors. Paul lives in the Netherlands.   Peter Weil is a retired associate professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Delaware, a contributing editor to the typewriter journal ETCetera for ten years through his quarterly typewriter “Ephemera” column, for which he won the QWERTY writing award in 2013, and an avid typewriter and ephemera collector for 20 years. During this period, he studied the history of the typewriter and its cultural and social impact. As part of this research, he has created one of the largest existing archives of photographic, written, and printed materials concerning the production and use of the typewriter in the century between the 1870s and the 1970s. If you love typewriters this book is a "must have". If you don't love typewriters there is much eye candy in this book for even the casual looker. It's a beautiful book that takes full advantage of modern color photography and the technical enhancements and enlargements of antique photographs. Well written with gorgeous photos in a modern layout that I love. A typewriter collector will love every carefully designed page. A non-typewriter person will be fascinated by the incredible variety and complexity but even more the BEAUTY of these elegant antique machines.

A gorgeous, well-written book on the history of the typewriter from two guys who have been on the collecting landscape for a long time. Avid typewriter aficionados and non-collectors alike will be drawn in by both the nostalgic historical photographs of a bygone era and the beautiful photos that highlight the bizarre designs of early machines. But the book is much more than that. It tells an intriguing story of the often bumpy road leading to the development of the writing machine. Books that chronicle history often are burdened with a litany of dates and numbers that make for tiresome reading. This book, though, avoids that tedious trap by bringing the narrative alive with interesting anecdotal stories about what transpired to bring one of the most important inventions of modern times to the forefront. In the beautifully crafted pages which can be found within the covers of this tome, you will find the most interesting of stories, the most artful of advertisements, and the most thrilling and adrenaline-pumping photographs of people with their typewriters! Well, perhaps not adrenaline-pumping, but the photographs contained in this book are certainly quite amazing, and allow us a glimpse into the office of yesteryear. The many well-done images of typewriters from collections around the world allow us a beautiful view of machines that most of of have only ever heard about, if even that. My only complaint is that the book eventually ended; Alas, poor Yorik. I knew him well, Horatio.

This book was purchased for our son who is very interested in typewriters. He has found the book to be interesting and engaging. The information far exceeds anything one can find by simply surfing the web. The book is also written in a way that makes it easy to read without being dull and simply a list of facts.

An excellent book about a fascinating machine. The authors are experts on the history and technology of typewriters, and the current world of typewriter collecting, using, repair, and restoration. The book has an engaging and well written text, with beautiful illustrations. Whether or not you have a typewriter, this is a great book. These books are very well written. I've read each one and could hardly put it down, anxious to start the next. Karina went through so much but in her journey she reached out and found a God who loves her . She still goes through so much,but God is with her. There are many twists throughout her journey which definitely keeps the reader glued to the page wondering what will happen next. The author was amazing with detail and story telling. But at its heart this is a fifteen year old girl's story. It's full of her life with friends, boys and school dances. Sleepovers with her bestie and Friday night football games. Best book I've read all year !

Being a teen is hard enough all by itself. Having a mom who deals drugs and forces you to live a lie is way tougher. Karina had become accustomed to this way of life in spite of all the craziness her mother brought to the table, but then the rug was pulled out from under her and everything changed. I'd read the prequel prior to book one prior to all the books being in a box set. It's nice having insight to the back story, but it's not a must to enjoy the story. If you've ever watched the TV show 'The Fosters', this story has that type of feel to it but on a Christian level. Fast paced, lots of drama and something is always happening.

Patricia Bell brings up topics that are so close to heart...child abuse and human trafficking. I love how she expresses the pain and difficulty that young people (and adults) feel when trying to recover and heal. It is hard to trust in God when one has experienced such trauma. Unfortunately, so many never get to experience the godly homes that Karina and Melissa did in these books.

I read each of these books separately and loved them all! I love when people come from such a hard life and actually find a real family. In the mean time, they come to know Jesus and that is the best thing of all. I like that not only do we see Karina's journey through all that happens to her, but we get to know more about some other people that are in her life, too. These books were my first exposure to Patricia's writing and I've been hokked ever since. Very well done!

The fist story, From House to Home, is not just a cute story with some romance in it, but it's one with depth and real life situations.I started reading it and wanted to just read all day to find out what happened.This first story will have you on the edge of your seat.

I loved the books, I ordered the first one and couldn't wait for the second one to get here, the story is so real to life and easy to read. Patricia told how the things were in the real world and said them very well. I now want to order the rest of her books

Joyce Hicks has long been my favorite watercolor artist and teacher, although I've never been able to attend her workshops. One of Joyce's many gifts is the ability to transform ordinary scenes into almost magical paintings. And she is willing to share that gift with other artists.I’ve seen many painting books where vital steps are missing. Either the publisher had to eliminate steps to save space, or the author doesn’t really want to reveal her special secrets to the masses. Either way, an artist finds the demonstrations hard to follow. I’ve sent back half a dozen art books because I was unhappy with the demonstrations.Not so with Painting Beautiful Watercolor Landscapes. Joyce shares twelve of her finest paintings and shows exactly how to recreate them. The goal is to help each artist to develop confidence and find a personal style. I highly recommend this book to my fellow artists!

It's the Nitty Gritty.......No fuss,no muss....... Simple, Complete,Honest.....Fast, accurate, an actually complete recipe for success. Joyce's guidance begins with the "What's," and the "Whys," how to determine what Your's are....and then the "How To". step by step. She includes photos of her works with step by step instruction as to how she obtained her results. She includes color choices, atypically complete iilustrations of her color mixing....but most of all a unique approach to encouragement.......Joyce leaves nothing out of the recipe including the why's of what she painted in each piece. Everyone tells you how great this book is. I have owned over 100 instruction books from some of the most respected watercolorists in the world..........To my mind this is about the best book that has ever been written for the any level of watercolorist.......... It's the direct "Whole Enchilada," from this down to earth, straight forward, self taught Texas, AWS artist......and then some.

I liked the paintings by Ms. Hicks and decided to purchase the book - it's probably the first watercolor book I've actually read all the way through. She talks about developing one's own style, and I am slightly amused because her style is definitely developed! I'm a newbie to W/C but even I recognize that she uses certain colors in each of her pictures that are not necessarily the norm! Definitely more mixing of blues and reds than I've run into! But the end result is so pretty, and she guides the reader step by step on how to put together a landscape for yourself - choosing what to eliminate to make a better picture, and making what could have been a "boring" landscape into an appealing picture. I definitely want to work through the exercises and tutorials throughout this book. I'll probably be stretching my sketching ability, but that's a good thing.

I fell in love with Joyce Hicks paintings after seeing some of her tutorials on utube. I went searching for in instructional book and found it here on Amazon. So what did I do? I ordered the Kindle edition by mistake!!! However, after viewing it on my Ipad... I'm very happy with my mistake. The book is easy to flip through and easy to carry as well. I don't feel I've lost anything by not having the hardcover edition. It turns out to be a very happy accident just as do often happens when using watercolors.

Unlike many watercolor instruction books, this one has effective explanations in its demos. Followed closely, one can achieve the signature Joyce Hicks look--but with hard work! I like how the author instructs readers to repeat the demo as often as needed to achieve success. It is a realistic teaching but one rarely given.

Never have I been inspired to write a review of any purchase until this book. And I have never purchased a book unseen, or not reviewed, let alone purchase two books together. But my friend and I love her work so much that I couldn't resist. This book has exceeded both of our expectations! It is so inspiring! Among so many lessons, she teaches us to "see" our own vision and how to make it a reality. I cannot recommended this book highly enough. This is by far my favorite watercolor book! Thank you, Joyce, for sharing your journey into watercolor in a way that allows us to discover our own journey.

I am new to watercolor painting, but I spotted Ms. Hicks's videos on YouTube and I was captivated by her style. When her book arrived I was a little disappointed that the colors weren't as vibrant as what I saw on her website and in other locations, but that doesn't affect the quality of the learning material she offers. This book will appeal to beginners and more advanced artists. I am happy to recommend it.

GREAT watercolor instruction book. This artist paints beautifully and gives a wonderful overview of the nature of this medium.Her paintings are beautiful. If you are a beginner you may find it difficult to get a good result. At an intermediate level or more it iswell worth the money if you are interested in landscapes and seascapes.
