Winter, by Karl Ove Knausgaard

Review

“The author casts the world in a holy glow of surprise and compassion… A winningly interior journey into the most interior of seasons.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred“One of the most satisfying elements of [Knausgaard’s] writing is the rendering of what it is like to be alive, to be a person in the world, whether alone or among people, to walk around as thoughts develop, or to hatch plans with others and participate in activities as a separate being and as part of a whole. His new series, a four-volume autobiography based on the autumn and winter seasons, offers a glimpse at how these effects are accomplished.” — David Varno, The Brooklyn Rail “I’d have to say that he’s awakened a tempest in me. . . Knausgaard wrote these essays, he said in an interview, “for fun.” And they are fun ... and stunning and glorious. . . it’s the seemingly endless stirring of his thoughts about the wide world out there that helps to stir ours.” — Bob Blaisdell, The Christian Science Monitor“The few winter-specific entries offer some lovely evocations of the snowbound Scandinavian landscape that will resonate with Knausgaard’s latitudinal neighbours. Even when discussing other subjects, though, the essays as a whole reflect the season’s mood of quiet introversion. Most relate to Knausgaard’s daily surroundings and follow a similar arc, beginning with a borderline-irritatingly simple statement (“Pipes transport flowing liquids” or “A chair is for sitting on”) before veering off on tangents that are by turns philosophic, funny, and personal. . . I loved the weird helter-skelter of its ramblings. Autumn and Winter don’t quite present things “anew,” but they give their subjects a uniquely Knausgaardian cast; the fun is in seeing where we end up, Plinko-style, from where we began. “ — The Toronto Star“Every child should be as fortunate as Knausgaard's daughter will be some day to have stories like these to usher them into the world. But since few will be that lucky, they and their parents might want to savor WINTER and its seasonal companions instead.” – Bookreporter.com   “Unlike the long passages in My Struggle that ruminated on a single idea, the essays in this quartet each last only a handful of pages. This lightness of touch may surprise his longtime fans, especially considering the weight of some of the topics he covers in ”Setting Limits, “Sexual Desire,” “Atoms,” and “The Brain.” But his ability to weave questions, reflections, and conclusions into such small spaces is often beautiful… When reading these essays, I sometimes paused to ask if Knausgaard was pulling the wool over my eyes with the beauty his prose alone. But no, he doesn’t….Winter reaches at emotions and common experiences that lay dusty in all of us.” — Chicago Review of Books

I did not enjoy the book at all and would not have read all the way through it if not for my book club. The writer’s thoughts go from pipes to crows to q tips and on and on. This is not writings to his unborn child as much as writings about nothing in particular.

It's a book by Knausgaard. If you haven't read My Struggle, stop! Read it first, then this book will be even more relevant.

Knausgaard's profound meditations on everyday objects and occurances is unmatched by any contemporary author. With a remarkable poignancy and clarity Knausgaard turns the mundane into the extraordinary with poetic and enlightened prose.

Winter is fast approaching here in New England. It is 5 O'clock PM and outside my office window it is pitch black. Now seemed to me to me a good time to read Karl Ove Knausgaard’s daily meditations on Winter. Karl was born and raised in the south of Norway in Kristiansand. I thought Norway would have much snow in the winter, but when I read Karl’s meditation on snow, I found out I was wrong. The snow that does fall often quickly melts, to the disappointment of Karl’s children. It is December 6, Karl’s birthday, and he stays in bed a little longer than usual so that his children can bring in birthday presents to him and sing happy birthday. This birthday ritual is not so much for Karl, whose birthday no longer means much to him, but instead he wants to please his children. Family is important to Karl and he often shares his thoughts with us about his wife and children. In his meditation on chairs Karl tells us about the chair in Ingmar Bergman’s great film Fanny and Alexander where the father sits to read to his family. For those readers not familiar with this fine film, it begins at Christmas and shows us a well-to-do family enjoying the holiday. Karl reminds us about the associations we make when we remember some item of furniture in our house as we were growing up. Now I am thinking about the kitchen table where so many happy times were spent when all the family got together for an Italian Sunday afternoon dinner. My nonna (grandmother) frequently saying mangia, mangia (eat, eat) to me as she put more of her wonderful food on my plate. Karl’s book is a springboard for our own thoughts and reflections.I smiled as Karl talked about the mess in his house that his children made that he could do little to change. He was embarrassed when people came to the house and saw the disorder spread out around the rooms. I thought about my own daughters whose bedrooms often looked like a bomb had struck. It was dangerous to walk into those rooms with so much stuff strewn around on the floor. I learned to just shut the door and let it be.Often enough Karl waxes philosophic as when he is talking about God. He thinks that “Everything that is beyond reason is subsumed under God… A relationship exists, there is no language for it, and when we submit to God, that is what we feel, an unimaginable depth of feeling….” As readers, we may or may not share Karl’s feeling about our relationship with God, but I was most interested in what he had to share with us about his own thoughts on this important subject.Winter has spread out throughout the book several black and white pictures by Lars Lerin that did not impress me. I was given a review copy of the book and it may be that the final edition has pictures that are not as washed out and blurred. For me, these pictures added little to the value and meaning of the text.Winter is not a book to be read cover to cover, but to be dipped into from time to time when the mood strikes us and we want to connect with a talented and thoughtful writer who wants to share some of his life experiences with us. Karl Ove Knausgaard is famous for his series of novels called My Struggle, which is autobiographical in content. These novels have made Knausgaard famous and have been translated into 22 languages. I had heard of Knausgaard, but have not yet read any of his novels. Knausgaard is a fine writer who marches to the beat of a different drummer, and that is a good thing. He surprises us with his creativity and fanciful thinking; he is a writer with a poetic imagination and sensibility. I enjoyed both the style and content of his memoirs and will dip into this book from time to time as I live through another cold New England Winter.

Absolutely boring. Nicely translated bland and trite essays.

with Winter, knaussgaard has written an extended letter in the form of brief essays to his fourth child, his third daughter, covering a period from the third trimester in the womb to her birth. at first, i was content eavesdropping to hear what wisdom he had to impart. but knaussgaard’s meditative style quickly loses sight of the unborn as his audience of the future and, as his topics become digressive, what started out as a handbook of knowledge of the immediate world by a bit of pessimist for his daughter, snares a wider audience.his choice of things to write about, taken from sweden’s rural landscape, each one as if glimpsed out of the corner of his eye while gazing out the window as he sits at his writing table, snow, otter, crow, bonfires, nose, crows, bonfires, even windows, are part rumination and part lesson.what he says often smacks as suspiciously not true and close to being whimsical. in The Crypt, what knaussgaard has to say about architectural drawings which were never realized as projects seems to me to speak indirectly of his writing style:‘Since the art of narration is fundamentally about credibility, few stories are more difficult to pull off than counterfactual ones. While stories set in parallel realities or in the future are in principle entirely detached from events in our world, and in that sense are free, counterfactual stories are closely connected with them, and what they demand of us, that we disregard we know and let this massive and extensive knowledge weigh less than a single line of reasoning in a single book, is difficult to comply with. On the other hand, every single moment of life stands open in several directions, it is as if it had three or seven doors, as in a fairy tale, into rooms that all contain different futures.’for a while i wondered if he was a follower of the french thinker, jean jacques rousseau, and believed the child should, if not be inclined by nature and given lessons on the object of inclination by a tutor, glean lessons of nature from a handed down book, outside the school room. a handbook like Winter. he does share concern about the socialization with other children in a school. in several of his brief essays he writes of driving his children to school. in Setting Limits, he writes of the emotions that get the better of him as parent when his children test the limits he as a parent set for them. he describes the messiness of their household, and some of their more colorful neighbors. but then there are his digressions and the reflective passages on issues over which he’s pondered for a while, as found in The Crypt, and his collected essays here seem less like a pedagogical tract.i found his writing to breathe with simplicity, and his descriptions not weighed down with a lot of detail, which saves his subject matter, that being everyday living, from being boring. this is a book that can be read in a couple sittings. if this is his style throughout all his books, then Winter isn’t a bad introduction to knaussgaard’s writing.the norwegian born literary critic and feminist theorist, toril mori, refers to knaussgaard’s writing as addictive, i understand how it could be.

Winter by Karl Ove Knausgaard is a series of short thoughts, each a page or two long that the author has written to his unborn daughter. Who wouldnt want to get something like this from their parent? The author talks about the family, his memories and his thoughts on topics like heat for their house or toothbrushes that the family shares. The writing is amazing and the topics can be surprisingly deep or dark, considering the audience. But, one can only assume that the book is meant for later in the daughters life when her father's ponderings will be more meaningful and even a blueprint for how life can be, disappointments and all.Since the book is a collection of these short thoughts, it reads fairly quickly. But, just because each topic is short doesnt mean that it isnt insightful. While the stories about family life were interesting and sometimes amusing, it was the thoughts about death and disappointment in life that were more moving.I look forward to reading more of the earlier writings by the author for his daughter.

The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards (A Long Line of Godly Men Profile), by Steven J. Lawson

Review

The growing embrace of Reformed thought in the past quarter of a century has been very encouraging to those of us who delight in this most biblical expression of Christianity. And the remarkable writings of Jonathan Edwards have, by the grace of God, played no little part in this expansion of Reformed theology. This new volume by Steve Lawson helps to locate the root of Edwards thinking in his close walk with God. It serves as a powerful reminder to those of us who delight in Reformed truth that Reformed orthodoxy and Reformed piety belong together, and that to focus on the former at the expense of the latter is not only un-Edwardsean, but also un-biblical. --Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological SeminaryTired of going at the Christian life in piecemeal fashion? Tired of half-hearted pursuits? Then you've come to the right book. Here Steven Lawson artfully points you to Jonathan Edwards, a model for pursuing holiness, humility, and love, and for the forsaking of sin; all driven by a relentless passion to glorify God and enjoy him forever. When Edwards wrote his Resolutions, he likely had no idea how much they would impact his life. Beware, they'll do the same for you. --Stephen J. Nichols, President of Reformation Bible College, Chief Academic Officer, and Teaching Fellow for Ligonier MinistriesThe pursuit of a regimented godliness is not unique to Christianity, but it is rare. Unlike popular versions of the Christian faith, Jonathan Edwards did not seek the disciplines of godliness for utilitarian ends, the self-help preoccupation of Western Christianity. He saw conformity to Christ as a means, the only means, to glorify God. Steve Lawson has done a wonderful service, producing in a tactful and pastoral manner Edwards pious resolutions, thereby helping us understand the inner life, the spiritual struggles and goals, of perhaps America's greatest intellect. --Dr. John D. Hannah, Research Professor of Theological Studies, and Distinguished Professor of Historical Theology, Dallas Theological Seminary

My Rating – Put it on the listLevel – Easy, Medium lengthSummaryThe first chapter is a short biographical stretch of the man many consider to be the greatest American Theologian of all time. The rest of the chapters are devoted to Edwards’ construction of his ‘Resolution.’ Unfortunately, as Edwards didn’t order or systematize his Resolutions, the book seems to jump around a bit as Lawson attempts to categorize the list. However, the book does an excellent job of spelling many of the resolutions and giving us the story or reasons behind them. Many of the most interesting parts of the chapters has to do with how the Resolutions affected Edwards’ life.In the appendix of the book, you can read the entire Resolutions. My ThoughtsThe best use of this book is to view it not as a biography, but as a commentary on Edwards’ Resolutions. The strength of the book isn’t so much it’s info on the life of Edwards, but instead it’s interaction with the Resolutions and different points of his life, or how his resolutions affected his life.I personally found some of his attempts overwhelming, bordering on unnecessary. Obviously, Edwards is much more pious and disciplined than me and most people. However, his limited the amount of food he’d eat so as not to waste time or enjoy food too much just seemed extreme and unhealthy. This book is well written and will challenge you. Lawson does a good job of posing questions at the end of each chapter. Anyone interested in spiritual disciplines or Jonathan Edwards needs to put this book on their reading list.[...]

I must say that I do like reading biography, and have enjoyed some really good ones in the Long Line of Godly Man Profile. And I do like Stephen Lawson as an author, his writing style lucid, engaging and at many times well worth the time spent investing in reading his works. I do especially like his Foundations of Grace, and Pillars of Grace where I was first introduced to his writings. However, I must say that I was kinda disappointed with this particular writing, I guess it was not the genre I was expecting. I was expecting a more biographical sketch of the life of Jonathan Edwards in this book. But as the book is titled, it specifies about the resolve (or resolutions) of Edwards and it does systematically run through many of his resolutions and how they are seen in his life through his own dairy records.Lawson categorized the resolutions into different categories and then systematically analyse them, and show how Edwards himself saw the importance of these resolutions and how he implemented or struggled with the implementations of these resolutions. The strength of this book is for helping Christians see the importance and reasons for discipline in the Christian life, and even relatively unimportant things like rationing of amount of food to eat, was an issue that Edwards looked into. It helps a Christian to visualize and see an example of one life lived solely to be of use by God for His glory. However, that's all there is to this book, if you're looking more for a biographical book on Edwards, I would encourage you to search elsewhere. But you're interested to look at the resolutions of Edwards, how important they were and what they meant in Edward's life and how was it was manifested in his life, this is THE book to get.Ratings: 3.75/5

** This review originally appeared on longing4truth.com **The name Jonathan Edwards will ring a bell of familiarity with most Christians today. For many, Edwards is considered to be America’s foremost theologian. His intellect remains unsurpassed throughout American Colonial Church History. His pastoral care and commitment to sound theology were trademarks that followed him throughout his life. Jonathan Edwards was par excellence in every facet of his life, ministry and family. As important as these things are in the legacy of Edwards, perhaps he was best known by his contemporaries for his desire to grow in holiness. Edwards was a man who pursued holiness. It was not his intellect, his great scholarly works, or even his well known sermons that made Edwards who he was. It was the Spirit-generated desire within him to “be holy as the Lord your God is holy.”In the book, The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards, Steven Lawson has undertaken the task of uncovering the practical disciplines that Edwards applied in his life to help him in this pursuit of holiness. Referencing what Edwards called his “Resolutions”, Lawson opens as it were the heart of Edwards in revealing the practical ways which he pursued the holiness that he came to be known for. The “Resolutions,” which are 70 in number, were used by Edwards to keep check on sinful tendencies that he feared would hinder his growth in his pursuit of sanctification. Lawson states that these resolutions were meant to serve as a “personal mission statement that would guide and discipline him in the pursuit of godliness” (26).Lawson begins the book by giving a brief biographical sketch of Edwards’ life in Chapter one. This sketch allows the reader to follow historical markers of Edwards’ life as Lawson gives some background to the Resolutions and the circumstances that may have prompted their inclusion. Lawson dedicates Chapter 2 to the observation of how important the resolutions were to Edwards. Lawson states that the Resolutions represented a “firm determination to keep spiritual priorities before him” (31). The third Chapter is a short examination of the preamble to the Resolutions, as Edwards himself states it.In the remainder of the book, chapters 4-9, Lawson organizes the Resolutions under six headings, each representing what Edwards felt was most important in this pursuit — a sort of order of priority. These headings are, “The Priority of God’s Glory,” “The Putting Away of Sin,” “The Precipice of Eternity,” “The Passion of Discipline,” “The Practice of Love,” and finally “The Posture of Self Examination.” Lawson does a masterful job of tying entries from Edwards’ diary that make mention of the importance of these Resolutions and how Edwards sought to reflect upon them daily. They were, as Lawson states, “to help direct his heart and life in the pursuit of godliness” (28). Edwards resolved to go over all 70 of them daily. The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards is a must read for any who long to be students of the life and works of Edwards. The “Resolutions” set the mark high, very high for Edwards, and his diary entries reveal how difficult he saw this task at different times (indeed, this is one of the reasons I found the book so appealing). It reveals Edwards not just in the sunlight of steady growth and mortification of sin but also in the clouds of discouragement and even despair over his failure to obey and his inclination to sin. This book reveals that Edwards saw himself as a Romans 7 man, yet at the same time a man that desired to pursue holiness at all cost. No discipline was too pressing if it would purge sin from Edwards’ life.I found the book to be very helpful in reminding me that holiness comes only with great discipline and sacrifice. It served as a reminder that the time to parlay with the world has come for all believers, and that we are to be in the world but not of the world. May God grant us all the same feverish desire and unwavering resolve that Edwards had in his pursuit of godliness. I highly recommend this book.In accordance with FTC regulations, I would like to thank Reformation Trust Publishers for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

You will truly enjoy the authors inside account of how the X-MEN animated series began, and the many challenges that were overcome. X-MEN was the Saturday-morning cartoon series that ushered Marvel comics to Hollywood and started the trend of Marvel motion pictures and TV series followed. I really enjoyed reading about what it takes to get an animated show to air on television. I recommend this to anyone who has an interest in animation or writing,

I started off loving this book. It's chock full of interesting behind-the-scenes information about how X-Men: The Animated Series came to be. If you are a fan of the show, or interested in how shows are made, this book is definitely worth a read. However, I wish this book had been structured differently, because it feels so repetitive by the end because you have heard certain stories three, four, or even more times.-The book starts out as the overall backstory of how the show came to be, challenges they faced while working on it, lots of insider info that I really was fascinated by.-Then it goes into an episode guide with details on each episode, and in some cases some of the things you already read about are repeated when they get to that specific episode.-Then it goes into interviews with each member of the cast, and in some cases you are now hearing certain stories again...-Then it goes into interviews with the writers, directors, producers, etc. and, you guessed it.... you are hearing some of the stories yet again.I wish they had structured it so the interviews were woven into the different topics, rather than being separate. Truth be told I didn't finish the whole book because I became bored by the end. But, I would still recommend it if you are a hardcore X-Men fan.

What a great read! If you love the X-Men in any of their incarnations, you have to get this book! If you're just curious about how a TV show makes it on the air, gets put together, and survives to touch millions of fans, then grab "Previously on X-Men." The author was the series showrunner, so he was in the middle of all the crises and triumphs that go along with a five-year-long creative project. He interviews 36 of the major players (cast, crew, artists, writers, executives) who together made this animated series a huge hit and impacted audiences around the world. There's trivia for the fans that you won't have heard anywhere else along with serious considerations about popular culture and the place of X-Men: The Animated Series within it. I love behind the scenes books about TV and movies and this is the best one I've ever read. Definitely five stars!

I grew up watching the cartoon so hearing the announcement of this book I knew I had to get it. Eric and Julia Lewald did an amazing job delving into the genesis of such a influential show of mine. The struggles to get it on the air, the issues with the first cast of voice actors, how "The Man" tried his best to wrestle control away to turn the show into something that'd have been lucky to complete a first season, this book's a great read. The one on one interviews with the creative staff as well as the voice actors was great. Getting to know these people who not only crafted the words, the images, but who when I read X-Men characters, I hear their voices. If you love the X-Men: TAS you will love this book.

A fantastic introspective look into one of the top three superhero Saturday morning cartoons of the nineties. I'm very happy with the "inside baseball" information.

The ESSENTIAL book for any 1990's X-Men animated series fan!!!

Brilliant insight into the early 1990s hit. If you want to know about the struggles of creating an animated cartoon, this is the book for you.

Great book, with a ton of insight from the people responsible for bringing the hit X-men show to life.
