I use these before we visit a location (Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Boston, Gettysburg, Mount Vernon, Lexington and Concord) so my son has some reference of the location and significance first. I also coordinate them with the BSA Historical Trails and NPS trails. Several years ago, my son (at age 9) had a full blown conversation with the Park Rangers at Ellis Island about the immigration process there, which showed his understanding of the events and the significance of the place. In addition, he was able to find a connection to Einstein because of his learning disabilities/abilities and Neil Armstrong, who was a Boy Scout as well. Much better heroes than those offered today. These are fun, short, easy, and a good supplement to what they don't really learn in school.
So far my kids and I have read two books of the same series (who was Christopher Columbus and who was George Washington ) for American History in our homeschool curriculum, and both of them were great! These books are written in a very easy language but they give you a good inside of what was going on during their times. They also give you little facts that you won't see in other history books or biographies like George Washington had fake teeth... so it makes these books very entertaining for children 8 and up.
This book was a quick, easy and incredibly educational read. There was no "fluff" in it or dumbing things down so kids could "get it" but the information was still presented in a very kid-friendly and easy to understand way. Both my 7 year old and I learned a lot more about George Washington after reading this - then we went out to Mount Vernon the next day and learned even more!
These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4
I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.
We love this series. We own maybe 9-10 different tittles. My 7 year old and me like to read them together. We've learned a lot of interesting facts about important figures and historic moments.
Great information my fifth grader was able to use for his report on George Washington. This series has been extremely helpful in getting my son to read nonfiction books.
I love this series and truly wish I had discovered it when my older two were in the young reader stage. This series of biographies is well written, filled with intriguing illustrations and perfectly sized short chapters. Most of all for this history minor momma, the ones we have read are historically accurate but written in a way that gives 1-4th graders a love for history. My 8 and 6 year olds eat these up. They are the only books my six year old spends his money on -- and he's reading 2-3 a week at night on his own (he's reading at a 3rd grade level -- and the books are perfect for that ability). Bottomline -- we love these books and according to the younger two, can't own enough of them.
