About the Author
Dennis Sherman is Professor of History at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the City University of New York. He received his B.A. (1962) and J.D. (1965) degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. (1970) from the University of Michigan . . He was Visiting Professor at the University of Paris (1978-79; 1985). He has received the Ford Foundation Prize Fellowship, the Council for Research on Economic History fellowship, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His publications include A Short History of Western Civilization, 8th edition (co-author); Western Civilization: Sources, Images, and Interpretations, 5th edition; World Civilizations: Sources, Images, and Interpretations, 2nd Edition (co-author); a series of introductions in the Garland Library of War and Peace; several articles and reviews on nineteenth-century French economic and social history in American and European journals, and short stories on literary reviews.

A horrible textbook. It jumps around in the timeline way too much, so hard to keep track and follow the historic timeline. If a teacher chooses this book for their class, don't take it!! You will be lost and confused the entire time!
I RENTED THIS TEXT BOOK I WISHED I WOULD HAVE PURCHASED IT.
We got this book as a required text for a History class. It has proven to be one of the most interesting and complete historical texts I've ever had the opportunity to read. I like it very much. I don't love it because I feel that it left me wanting more on certain topics. Overall, it is being added to our home library. :)
I believe these two historians have made a giant leap forward as it pertains to piecing together history, then doing it from as many perspectives as possible. The use of religion as a whole, not just a single one, to reflect its contributions - whether positive or negative - on an area has truly made this a fitting purchase. While I do not agree with all aspects or trains of thought, I can truly respect the effort and point of view of these two authors.
Most of the book is written on with dirt and smudges. Disgusting.
Very informative book. If you want to be a history major, this is the book you need.
When searching for the ISBN of the 4th addition of the book, Amazon brought up this as the result. While it is nice that the book is available in digital format and that it was cheap, the book is out of date and not what is being required anymore. If I was searching for this book I would have put in the ISBN of this book. Amazon Failed on this one.
It's well written, however, the author has a tendency to stray from uniformity in that he'll lull the reader into thinking they can trust that he'll add the reign dates directly out beside each king, emperor, monarch, empress, etc., but just when you have your pen and highlighter at the ready to mark those points (or write them in note as is the case for me), he switches and leaves the reigning dates off for pages and then reintroduces that leader with that information. As a textbook goes, that's counter-productive for the student, I have to write the information down but find my way back to that area of my notes to THEN include the information which should have been there when he first mentions that particular leader. He does a relatively good job of explaining things such as the french revolution, the scientific revolution, agricultural revolution, etc., It's a good textbook but heavy and large and hard to wield with other books and notebooks.
