The notes from the discussion of the Constitution at the end make this a six-star book. If you want to understand the "intent of the founding fathers" this book and the Federalist Papers will give you a better understanding of the process and intent. Side effect: you wwill be horrified by the sheer volume of ignorance of our current legislators,

Great, concise, small text version of some foundational American documents. It is pretty small text, so only order this if you're comfortable with that. It includes three appendices with the Articles of Confederation, the U.S. Constitution, and the list of Speakers at the First Constitutional Convention of 1787. It also has a decently thorough index (five or so pages). Great purchase. A great read and eye-opening. Bought this alongside the Federalist Papers and I'm quite pleased.

I owned the Signet version of the Federalist Papers. I have read the Anti-Federalist Papers before. I own them in another format. But this book contains the notes from the convention. Such a valuable resource. Great set. Buy the Federalist Papers too. Read them both. Such a great debate. The Federalist may have won, but Brutus and the other Anti-Federalist foresaw many issues we are currently facing, such as a very powerful executive and an erosion of States’ rights. Great read.

A warning of the problems which might arise under the proposed Constitution. Not all came to fruition but many did. More important is the premise of the work which speaks against the centralization of power and the subsequent loss of liberty. Some of the concerns were addressed by the Bill of Rights but the tendency of the Constitution to centralize power in the national government remains unaddressed.

The notes the debates at the convention are eye opening. The founding fathers went to great lengths to secure their position and property rights from the ill-informed masses.; Those who believe that the Constitution is intended to foster democracy would do well to read Mr. Ketcham's treatment.

Many Americans were clearly quite satisfied with the structure of government under the Articles of Confederation and it had indeed served them well. However, many elements also wanted to strengthen and energize the government so that it could get more done. This brought with it many positive developments but also a number of stark dangers. The Anti-Federalists, led by Patrick Henry and a few others, made powerful and compelling arguments against the concept of Federalizing into a Union in what they considered to be a rush, especially since things appeared to be working so well already. Indeed, many of the early debates already included issues that would continue to emerge later: slavery, the lack of need for a standing army, the danger of taxation, the danger of a centralized government with a monopoly on force of arms, the danger of creating a new aristocracy, and the danger of a powerful money class who could buy political influence in the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches. Unfortunately we have seen many of the warnings of the Anti-Federalists come to fruition and their worry of turning the presidency itself into a near monarchy may also be seen to develop at some future point. This is a wonderful read for anyone interested in U.S. history, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the early elements of the slavery debate, and much more.

You know, this book consists of general remarks attributed to those representing states at The Federal Convention of 1787 and those participating in individual state's ratification of the Constitution which are the closest to factual evidence existing of anti-federalist thought processes and positions.

Most people have read the Federalist Papers, but the Anti-Federalist Papers are the other-side of the coin. A worthwhile read, as it is great getting the other (though less historically significant) perspective.
