I loved the previous books in this serious and eagerly anticipated this novel. Boy was I disappointed. This book is a boring, rambling mess that made little sense and did nothing to further the series. Save yourself some time by reading the first 200 pages (at most) and then the last two chapters. You won't miss a thing. Let's just hope the next one is better and that he starts listening to his editor (or gets one with the guts and/or power to trim his novels).

Shortly after the events in the Emerald Palace Roland and his Ka-tet continue along the path of the beam. The Ka-Tet come across a village that is expecting a raid of evil men on horses who will kidnap half the children in the village. The children do return, however they return ‘Roont’, as mentally impaired. It’s not clear what connection the raiders have to do with the Tower. Yet Roland and his group decide to defend the town against the raiders. I mean Roland and his group are on a quest to save the Dark Tower which is kinda responsible for well all the good in the world. So why would they risk their lives on a cause that has nothing to do with the Tower? Especially when the town is divided on whether they even want Roland’s help. The story itself proceeds at a snail’s pace. Countless pages are devoted to trivial matters, such as the story of the priest who is really a minor character. King devotes an incredible 200 pages to telling the story of the priest. ‘First I went to work at a homeless shelter handing out soup’. Then I went to work at Manpower.’ Like I give ^^&^^&++. What does this have to do with the Dark Tower? So for 900 pages what do you get? I really long drawn out story that has almost nothing to do with the quest for the Dark Tower. Terrible.

The Wolves of Calla blew me away! It is the story of a town that has nearly half of their children kidnapped every generation or so, and then returned 'roont' , which is to say their minds are gone and they are physically altered also. Roland and his ka'tet intend to stopped this, and much of the book is about planning, and their interactions with the town people. But my favorite part is watching the way each character grows during the course of the book. We are allowed to see deeper into their thoughts and gain a better understanding of what motivates them. Another thing that blew me away was the language, or dialect that King invents for the town and which Roland and company pick up on very quickly. It is rhythmic and almost poetic and is deeply rooted in respect for fellow humans. Get the book. You'll be happy you did.

In 1999 Stephen King was seriously injured by a wayward van while out walking on a rural route near his home. The details of that accident are colorfully recounted in his pseudo-memoir masterpiece, On Writing. A long recovery followed and, in more ways than one, the whole messy affair inspired him to complete his Dark Tower epic. And complete it he did. He wrote the final three novels back-to-back, and although King has continued to write and publish in the ten years since (I'm writing this review in 2015), few may remember that he did threaten to retire due to creative exhaustion once his sprawling epic was concluded.Wolves of the Calla adheres to the series' western roots by giving us the Mid-World version of The Magnificent Seven. And for the most part King pulled it off. This is a worthy entry in the series. The Good:Going todash and those spine-tingling chimes, visiting the rose in the vacant lot, the Ka-Tet being welcomed at the town pavilion, Callahan's tale and the highways in hiding, the bizarre rural dialect of the townsfolk, training the Sisters of Oriza, Jake and the Dogan, confronting Andy, and the final showdown with the Wolves of course. The Not-So-Good:Saving that pushover Calvin Tower and his stupid rare books, the over-and-over-and-overuse of the number nineteen, the cartoonish weapons of the Wolves—their lazer swords (lightsabers from Star Wars) and their sneetch grenades (snitches from Harry Potter), and book 5's number one gripe from the fans: Stephen King inserting himself into the story. This will play out more in the next two books, but in my opinion it's a wash. King being in the story works in some places and not so well in others.

I am enjoying this series, and I enjoyed this book in particular as King FINALLY deals with the religiosity (even the CHRISTIAN / CATHOLIC) religiosity of some of his characters in a respectful, non-sneering, non-dismissive, non-condescending way. Clearly he got sober by the 2002 release of this title. Contrast this with the fatuous idiocy to which we were subjected in the 1994 *Insomnia* which I had to put down around 2/3 through.. I expect he was heavily into the bottle when he wrote that tripe. In this offering, a fallen away Catholic priest re-finds his faith, and the gunslinger asks for and receives his blessing. Mr. King, you've discovered the ability in your sobriety to treat those whose faith you do not share respectfully! Warmest and most sincere congratulations. It restores to you the humanity I was sometimes unable to find in your work during your drinking years!
