This book is for people who haven't the slightest idea of what 6 sigma is. Imagine buying a book titled, "QuickStart to Backyard Gardening" and have the book explain that fruit and vegetables at the store come from industrial farms, but you can grow your own fruit and vegetables at home. If you grow your own vegetables, they will be fresh, whereas vegetables at the store might have picked weeks ago. At first the vegetables growing at home won't look like what you buy at the store, because it is the whole plant...DUH! This book is literally that basic!! It is completely useless for a person who wants training for 6 sigma.
Yikes. I've never written a review for a book purchase before but after looking this over I am compelled to warn fellow shoppers.I'm work in healthcare, and many of my position responsibilities involve CQI. I am planning on taking the SSGB test in a few months. I'm a little familiar with Six Sigma now but wanted to gather lots of reading materials for "absorption" prior to my test. I never thought this book - clearly labeled as "for beginners" - would add much to substantive material needed for study but thought, what the heck, I'll buy it as a quick read. What a mistake. I'm really not sure how to describe the writing style used throughout the book other than to say it's annoyingly BAD. I am definitely not an English major but the grammar and sentence structure used in this book is the equivalent of fingernails down a chalkboard. It's as though Andrew Dice Clay was narrating the book, minus the expletives. And I like ADC! If you want to catch a glimpse of what's in store, just read the back cover for a preview. Good god this person cannot write, OR the book was written in a different language and translated poorly. Hard to tell.I sent back for refund. Steer clear of this one, folks.
I am stunned at the positive reviews for this book. I learned far more about Lean Six Sigma from web sites than from this book. It is very poorly written, almost completely unorganized and random, not even close to a "Quickstart" guide because it is primarily observations and generalizations rather than an outline of how to get started. A few examples that are direct quotes from the book:-- "Chapter 1 - What exactly, is Lean Six Sigma? Excuse me, but whatever Lean Six Sigma happens to be, you will agree it cannot be bulky because we are clearly told it is lean."-- "Chapter 2 - How Lean Six Sigma Works on a Daily Basis: Hey! How much profit would you like? Really, that is not a question you expect to hear from anyone who calls you an entrepreneur - not at all. So let us agree we call such a question redundant. Or maybe you prefer to call it rhetorical. The reality is that you and I want as much profit as we can make, otherwise we would just be whiling away time on some warm beach and putting in an hour or so a week to attend to business."-- "Chapter 5 - Things for CEOs to Note in Readiness to Implement Lean Six Sigma (LSS): > "That it is not good to wait until you are making losses to begin thinking of implementing Lean Six Sigma. " > "That LSS does not become redundant once you achieve success" > "Acting with wit is not a luxury"Those are direct quotes from the book, not typos -- the book actually says "Acting with wit is not a luxury." I'm not sure the author is a native English speaker.Another example: "How best can institutions implement LSS? Good question this one is because theoretical knowledge will only help if it is implemented and implemented well."And another: "Ever heard someone warn that saying the ram is fat is no proposition that it be slaughtered?" Sorry, WHAT?!?!?I could give many, many more examples because those are typical of the content of this book.BOTTOM LINE: Don't waste your money on this book. But any other book. Or no book. But not this one, it is worthless.
Wow this is bad. I mean bad. Think back to high school writing a paper the night before it is due using Cliff's Notes rather than researching the material bad. No credible information, no guide for implementation, no real world examples or case studies. Just a bunch a poor grammar overly simplified examples and unnecessary content just to fill pages. The review comparing this to a bad gardening book was spot on. Don't waste you money.
I have never reviewed a purchase, but this is a first. This "book" is so exceptionally and exquisitely AWFUL, that I read to the end to see if there was anything to redeem it. Nothing beyond defining a few acronyms and yellow/green/black belts in 128 pages of worthless drivel. A grating, chatty, style full of malapropisms, mixed metaphors, and word choices indicating authorship by a non-native english speaker with a spell-checker. The apparent print date on the last page and lack of a publisher's imprint lead me to conclude self-published. Lesson learned on the prior, and also lesson learned on the Amazon "frequently purchased together" suggestions. It is a struggle to not include profanity. Caveat emptor.
This book reads like it was written by a college freshman. Seriously a waste of money. The first eight chapters were just endless exposition about how the process can benefit someone without a single concrete example of the actual Lean Six Sigma practice.Don't waste your money.
Written for a boss who knows nothing about SixSigma. Very executive summary and easy vocabulary reading, spelling and grammar errors surprised me. Should have been written at more than a grade-school level of comprehension.
The book begins by saying that Six Sigma is about reducing waste. That is incorrect. Lean is about reducing waste. Six Sigma is about reducing variability. This told me that the author was very far from being an expert in either Lean or Six Sigma.I continued reading for a couple chapters before abandoning this superficial, inaccurate, and poorly written book.
