About the Author
Jim Morrison is an award-winning reporter and former home inspector whose writing has appeared in The Boston Globe, Banker & Tradesman, and Forbes.com. Growing up just north of Boston in a family with seven kids, his interests in housing and writing were sparked at a young age. His father Al regularly conscripted Jim to hold flashlights and foot ladders while he performed home improvement projects, and his sixth-grade teacher gave him high marks on his first attempt to write a short story. These two formative experiences have had an outsized influence on Jim's professional life. Jim joined his father's home inspection business the day after he graduated high school and he learned how to evaluate homes at his father's elbow. Later, he took over the family business and eventually started writing about inspections and construction for his local newspaper, the Lancaster Times. After 25 years of inspections and a short stint as a condo rental agent/home inspector in Puerto Vallarta, México, Jim returned to the Boston area, inspected a condo for a very pretty girl, married her, and launched a full-time writing career. He's been writing for newspapers, magazines, and websites ever since. His work has appeared in hundreds of publications in the United States and beyond. Jim is as proud as can be about his three whip-smart, funny, and limit-testing kids: Seamus, Brendan, and Jamie. Home Buying In 30 Minutes is dedicated to them and especially to his wife Kelli, who is the mainsail of the family ship. When not writing, Jim can most often be found close to home working in the yard, doing home maintenance, or grilling dinner to perfection out on the deck. The author's knowledge of the home-buying process makes this book a valuable addition to the bookshelf of first-time condo and home buyers, as well as owners who have not purchased a residence in years and are unfamiliar with changes in the process. Mr. Morrison's book is clearly written and easy to follow. Particularly helpful is the chapter concerning home inspections, in which the author's expertise as a former home inspector is fully displayed. This is an excellent resource for Realtors to provide to their clients.
Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review.Jim Morrison does an excellent job of covering the process of buying a home. Of particular note is his skill in pointing out the risks in NOT engaging with a real estate lawyer and a home inspector, which some people do in an attempt to save money. The book is highlighted by Morrison's writing style, which makes this book a breezy, quick 30 minute read. I especially enjoyed the phrase 'Uncle Meanswell and Cousin Sixpack' in reference to a deck that was not built by professionals.Must read for first time home buyers.
Terrific overview on everything from financing, working with a realtor, assessing a home's condition, prequalifying for a mortgage, and more. Easy-to-understand writing. I was interested in this book because some of my books feature a real estate appraiser. I ended up learning a few things, even though I've bought several houses. I'm passing the book to a family member who's considering buying for the first time. I received a copy of the book in consideration of a review. This is my honest review. I recommend the book.
Author Jim Morrison knows houses better that 99.5% of the population. In his career as a home inspector, he examined the repair (and lack of repair) of thousands of them. Then he became a journalist. Adding research skills to deep knowledge about houses created this perfect storm of a little book. If you are getting started looking for a house to buy, this is a great stop on your house hunting tour.Some of his details about the process won't match your state's practices, so check with your own attorney and real estate agent for how the contracts are written locally,
Even if you are a seasoned vet at buying real estate. I guarantee you will pick up something from this read. If you are a first time home buyer- you are crazy to not read this thing first.
A small book that packs a big punch! Lots of great information that is practical and useful for new and second-time homebuyers. Nicely organized chapters, easy read, and with succinct tips. Purchased for my daughter who should be able to learn and apply.
Very well laid out or the potential buyer. I am a seasoned home buyer and also a home inspector and found Mr. Morrison's insights very helpful! Truth be told it took me more than 30minutes to read, but I enjoyed every minute!
