Same as I have said before. Really good books for young teens. Even though I am older person I like the stories.

So exciting! This is the best book series EVER! I could not put it down so if you love horses, you will love this book series

The book "victory and the all stars academy" was so intense that I was holding my breath almost the entire time I was reading this book!

I like the NZ/ Australia setting. However it has to be said that most of the time the location setting does not feature as one equestrian school looks much like another.Issy and her NZ friends find the accents of the Aussies funny, just as we in Ireland do, when they are sent over to the continent for a short stay to participate in team training and a contest. I was a bit surprised by the way this contest is conducted, and how Issie never seems to contact her parents, which for a mid teens girl is odd.The young people are given school horses of varying abilities and while it makes sense to some that the best riders get the best horses, giving the younger or weaker riders the less skilled horses does seem unfair to them.We just see training training training so this is not for the reader who wants to read about kids going out for a ride and having an adventure. As the series is about secrets, the secret in the book is a puppy kept quietly in a stable (and none of the people running the stables notices? I don't think).Lots of info about higher level riding is imparted but the horses are pretty much treated like machines there to work and their personalities don't come through. Issy is given Victory, a schoolmaster. At the end the riders have to compete at a one-day event. Crowds are gathered. Issy's parents are not shown phoning her to wish her luck and tell her to be careful.The event seems rather too challenging for young riders and I simply cannot agree with riders having to change from showjumping gear and into a back protector and helmet against the clock. The safety gear is obligatory and having something worn loose or wrongly fastened won't help anyone. The rider may also need to adjust stirrup lengths. I believe if the jumping and cross country are run together this way, the clock should be stopped when the rider enters the pit stop area, with let's say a maximum time of three minutes, then that gives time for a correct change of safety gear and the clock starts again as soon as the rider leaves. This is how three-day-events are run after the warmup phases. And why couldn't the jumping be held first and separately, which happens in any one-day-event I've seen. The time appears to be too tight as the riders are shown galloping around a set of fixed jumps. Dangerous, horses flatten at a gallop.And what is the reason why one side has to jump all their riders first? If a side loses the toss why doesn't their first rider go and then the first from the other team, alternating? It's not cricket. The toss gives far too much advantage to the second team as described by the author. And of course she has to put Issie's team second to go, because the story's tension would deflate otherwise. In a showjumping Nation's Cup (and any Riding Club event here) the teams jump their first riders, then the second riders for each team and so on, sustaining tension right to the final round for all the teams.One girl calls out helpful directions to the rider who has lost her way. The girl gets praised and the rider gets a clear round. I don't know what rules this is run under, but in showjumping the rider would be eliminated. However perhaps all of this oddness is how Australian riding contests are run.This is an unbiased review.

I loved it sooo much.I was kinda anowed the way deedee acted but i got usto it.If you are a person who has wanted a horse forever and have high hopes for riding you will love this book.

This is my favourite book out of Pony Club Secrets. I still don't get why Stella was chosen to go to the Young Riders Challenge. I'm sure Ben or Dan should of gone because Dan won the Horse of the Year. I love the bit where they find Wombat and when they go and feed him. Dee Dee is one of my favourite characters because she is hilariously funny! I would defenately rate this 10/10 and 5 stars.

A native of Syracuse, NY, Suzy Szasz retired as head of Greenwood Library of Longwood University in June 2016 after five years at Longwood. Previously she had been the Deputy Librarian of Virginia (at the Library of Virginia), Associated Dean for Collections, Preservation & Digital Initiatives at the University of Louisville Libraries, and had held various positions at the Cornell University Library for more than 20 years.Suzy is a past president of the Virginia Library Association and also served as Chair of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV) Library Advisory Council. She has also been vice president/president-elect of the Richmond Academic Library Consortium and the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies/State Library Agency Section, a division of the American Library Association (ALA). She remains a member of editorial boards including: LL&M (journal of the American Library Association/Library, Leadership & Management Association) and Public Services Quarterly, and was previously on the board of Preservation, Digital Technology & Culture (and served twice as editor-in-chief under previous titles). Ms. Szasz' journey with lupus is decidedly atypical, and could unduly alarm many who suffer from lupus. Yet, her pluckiness and approach to her illness can help the faint of heart advocate for themselves in dealing with their illness and with their physicians. Although I often felt that her relational functionings left something to be desired, and felt this was a book I wouldn't want to own, in the end, I had formed an affection for her. I often remember and savor the lessons I learned and her wry wit. Finishing the book was like saying goodbye to an enigmatic friend who has lived life with bravery and zest, and who taught you a few flourishes along the way..This is not a book which details symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of lupus, but rather, as the author states, a book about what it is like to live daily with a chronic illness whose effects are not readily apparent nor understood by those who surround its target.

I have read this book over 6 times and I always catch something new. Thanks to this book it helped me cope a little with the medication my doctor has put me on. This is a wonderful read and very informative.

Can a person live a flourishing, purpose-filled life in spite of chronic illness and near constant pain? According to author Suzy Szasz, the answer is a resounding, "yes". Szasz's book, Lupus. Living With It: Why You Don't Have To Be Healthy to Be Happy, is written with an enthusiasm for life. Despite her constant battle with the exhausting chronic illness, Lupus, Szasz retains her meaning in life by refusing to become a victim of her disease.From reading Suzy's book, I found that she accepts the existentialist challenge of creating meaning for herself, rather than endlessly searching for meaning. She maintains her dignity by refusing to play the victim role. Although she rightly could have accepted such a role given her situation.Instead of just blindly accepting the advice of her physicians, she does research for herself, reading journal articles that she can only halfway understand. At one point, she and her father visit a world-renowned physician who specializes in Lupus. The physician fails to address Suzy as a person (making her out to be a mere object) and tells her to dramatically increase her steroid medication. When her father asks about harmful side effects of the drug, "but doctor, won't that destroy her bones?", the specialist glibly responds that her bones are not her concern right now. Rather than accepting the advice, Suzy does her own research and eventually finds a way to keep her disease from flaring up by getting a splenectomy.The key insight I took away from this stimulating book was to refuse to see yourself as a victim, no matter how tempting it is to do so. Suzy was able to give her life meaning through constantly striving in academics, work, writing, and the refusal to be victimized by a relentless illness. For those of us who still have our health, we should all the more so refuse to be victims of our own making.

I, too, was fascinated with the author's journey and disturbed by her relationships with others. She is judgemental and critical of those upon whom she relies. And she relies on them very, very much. Obviously she comes from wealth and means,never struggling with the pain and difficulties that come from financial ruin, dealing with Social Security Disability, poverty and working, even while very sick, when your very survival depends upon it. Not all of us have Wealthy Doctor Daddy to rescue us whenever we are in trouble. Having said that, I relate to and admire her chutzpah in dealing with her doctors, her efforts to be informed and educated about her illness and her willingness to take responsibility for managing her illness. Her story is most useful in showing persons with chronic illness how to manage their care and advocate for themselves. It is a compelling story, nonetheless!

Arthur Hove, special assistant emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, served in a number of capacities during a long association with the University. He was assistant to the chancellor and director of public information from 1970 to 1989. From 1989 until his retirement in 1996 he was special assistant to the provost. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he also taught courses in the School of Business, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Department of Art. He holds the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by the Wisconsin Alumni Association and is co-author, with Warrington Colescott, of Progressive Printmakers: Wisconsin Artists and the Print Renaissance (1999) also published by the Press. In the eight years he spent researching and writing the History, Hove combed the University's archives and those of the State Historical Society. In much of this work, he was assisted by Anne Biebel.

05-11-2011 I will update my review later if the zip file issue is resolved. Thing is, having the code in the zip file is critical in order to go through the tutorials in the book. It's pages of code and would be near impossible to type by hand without any typos. The book even suggests going to the Apress website and downloading the zip file of the code. So, if I can't open the zip file I can't do the tutorials, which means the book is worthless.05-11-2011 Although I have not got through the book due to the issue above I can share this. It's short for a technical book, only 208 pages. But, if it gives me what I need concerning APEX plug-ins it will be worth it. Just not sure at this point, because I can't continue through the book until the zip file issue is resolved.05-14-2011 I emailed Apress (the publisher) about the corrupt zip file and the responded the next day, on a Saturday. I was extremely impressed with that. They mentioned that IE is often the culprit when the zip file does not download correctly, so they recommended that I try FireFox, and I did. I am glad to report that the zip file did not corrupt when I used FireFox to download it, so I was able to unzip it and open the folders, etc. I have changed my initial rating from 1 star to 3. I am now able to continue using the book. When I finish the book I will append this review, give a more detail review, and make a final adjustment to my rating.

I always order these Lonely Planet books months BEFORE my trip, not only to see if it is really where I want to go, but also as my guide when I am there!They contain, JUST ENOUGH INFORMATION, without overkill. Nice colorful photos, and the end section always makes you educated on the dangers in the ocean as well!

Not only are the basic datatypes and datastructures of Lisp represented, but the stuff that a software professional needs to know about: concurrency, debugging, optimization, dates, times, calling C/Java/C++, dealing with JSON and XML, quicklisp, HTTP, GUIs, organizing projects with asdf, relational databases, hooking into the garbage collector, extending the reader, disassembly, and more.If you're ready to go beyond an academic approach to lisp (and are tired of reading meandering blog posts about it from people who never took the time to learn it), this book turn you into a full on Lisp software engineer.A word of caution, however. If you are new to Lisp, I would not suggest this book. It's not that you couldn't learn the language from it. You could. But it would take lots of discipline, and a lot of stuff is taken for granted. This is more for someone who already knows Lisp, but wants to round out what they already know with things they'll run into when using Lisp. If you are newer, the book recommends Practical Common Lisp. I'd second that recommendation.

You cannot be involved in the Lisp community without hearing about Dr. Edi Weitz; this man has a long list of accomplishments. His book does not disappoint either.He describes a problem and then analyzes various solutions to it in a no-nonsense, logical, easy to understand way.In each example you can tell he has tried the solutions he writes about, and has learned lessons along the way.In issues I had personally encountered, it was interesting to see him scrutinize the various programming choices, the problems with those choices and their outcome.Whether you are a beginner or experienced programmer this book is a valuable resource for solving many common Lisp programming problems.For the beginner this is a reference to have ready to address future issues you will most certainly encounter. For the experienced programmer, you can see many different approaches to problems you have already encountered, and see the flaws in your past choices, or to use as a reference for future issues.One thing I particularly enjoyed was how the author would discuss how one algorithm, while not wrong, might be received negatively by peers and why. This is especially good for those autonomous programmers who lack such feedback.I highly recommend this book as a supplement to such books as: Practical Common Lisp, Successful Lisp, or Onlisp.

A perfect companion piece to Peter Seibel's Practical Common Lisp, Weitz's Common Lisp Recipes is a really, really good examination of how to actually use the language, as well as a good examination of some of the more arcane corners of the language (e.g. I actually feel like I understand logical pathnames now). It's a joy to read, and despite programming in Lisp for over a decade I felt like I learned something in nearly every recipe.I can't recommend it highly enough.

This book will definitely help any intermediate-level Lisper, but will also be useful for the advanced ones. Covering pretty much every aspect of Common Lisp in a series of practical recipes, this book helped me discover many areas of Common Lisp I've previously missed or was only aware of their existence. Besides teaching me a lot of very useful things and techniques, it boosted my confidence in Lisp programming. The book also serves as an excellent reference due to well-made index - so if you forget how to use a particular Lisp function or feature, you can quickly look up examples of using them in context.

This is a great book and a must have for programmers who want to increase their LISP skills. Unless you're a Peter Norvig or an Guy Steele I am certain that there is much to be gained from this book. For me, it was a wealth of information: I picked up a lot of subtle points and filled in a lot of gaps. I highly recommend this book!

Like his other book, QBQ!, this one is written to address the problems of society and they all begin with you. The author highlights how we can accept responsibility in our lives, teach others to take responsibility, and not become victims. Like his other book, I think this is probably preaching to the choir, but it does offer us tools to talk about responsibility. What is wonderful is his constant reminder that when we complain about the world we are shifting the blame and that offers no solutions. I wish politicians would read this book and get out of our lives. Yes, obesity is a problem. No, the government can't fix it. Yes, kids struggle in school. No, schools can't fix it. We have to solve our own problems. As the author suggests, we have to ask "What can I do to own the situation?" That's really all it takes. In our world of blame, this book can help solve many of our problems. We must stop saying "guns are the problem," "corporations are out of control," "it's not my problem," "we need more laws," and all the other popular phrases to pass the buck. If something impacts your life, it's YOUR problem and you are the best person to step and solve it in your corner of the world.

I enjoyed the quick read, and I know some people might think it is common sense, I don’t disagree. Yet we still live in a world where people chose not to take ownership and play the blame game. Not sure how common sense strategies, get lost in the day to day. But this book helps put "verbs" into your sentences. I have a family member that hates to read anything, and I encouraged her to read this book because it is a quick read. She not only finished this book with some motivation..but wanted to read the QBQ next (due to the references in the book) -- good thing I had QBQ on hand =)

John Miller has done it again, QBQ was a recommended read by my area director. These books are great, I've started to eliminate victim thinking and taking accountability for my actions. Repetition is the motor for learning. I try and keep the QBQ message in front of my mind in all situations. Ask yourself the right questions and you'll have a completely different outlook on life and stressful situations. Moving on to his next book Outstanding!!

Good follow up to the amazing QBQ book. I recommend as a practical guide to implement all the life changing principles from that game changer book.

FLIPPING THE SWITCH is really a continuation of John Miller's first book, "QBQ: The Question Before the Question", and you will certainly want to read QBQ first to get the full impact out of this one. QBQ is for everyone, whereas this book, although everyone would benefit from it, is more geared towards the team leader.The advice is simply put. For instance, your questions should begin with "what" or "how", not "who", "when" or "why". Of course there are always exceptions to that, but just the simple premise of it will take you along way towards asking better questions. Another simple example that carries a lot of traction is for leaders to ask themselves each day, "What can I do today to develop my people?"This book discusses five advantage principles; learning * ownership * creativity * service & trust. Ready to use information on each advantage principle is covered.Like QBQ, Flipping the Switch is simply written and can be read in a day or two with long term benefits. You definately want to read this one, but you want to read QBQ first.

The first soap I ever made was the Goat Milk and Honey Shampoo Bar. I really liked how it cleaned my hair and left it shiny and well defined. My whole family was impressed. I am looking forward to using some of these other recipes.

Well I figured since natural soap making that it will be without lye. But it needs lye which makes it difficult when you don't want to use lye or have lye in your house with little ones.

This book is beautifully created! Absolutely perfect for starters. The layout and organization is well thought out and so much knowledge is shared in a very easy to digest manner. A great balance between both the art and the science behind soap making. I found most helpful were the conversion charts, the natural colorant color swatches, the easy-to-understand use of SAP values, and the immense amount of starter recipes. I truly understand how to craft my own recipe using percentages and SAP values.This book is one book of a collection and should not be your only source though. I found this author had subjective views on which oils should and shouldn't be used for "ethical reasons" and which additives shouldn't be used based on the authors "research", but please note the author does not share any of this research in the form of footnotes or asterisks or are any of the research listed in the references part of the book.

I wish I had read more reviews and perhaps sampled this before I bought it. I’m vegan, and every recipe I’ve looked at includes lard or tallow. Wow! From what I understand I can probably substitute (responsibly sourced) palm oil as long I’m careful to to check everything, but the reason I bought the book is because I’m a beginner soap maker and I wanted to just follow a recipe. Oh, well.

I think the book contents are probably great, but I can't read it. Didn't realize that it was a digital copy. When I first purchased, I could read it on my computer. Now, I bought all the ingredients to make soap and can no longer access the book. Can anyone direct me? It is in my digital purchase history but not allowing me to see more than the look inside." Would love to make some soap!

Easy to follow directions. Great for both beginners and experienced soap makers. Only would have loved more pictures but I'm pleased with the book. Now I can't wait until mine is cured to see how it turned out.

I would recommend this book to newbies and to all soap makers. I’ve learned so much from this book, the natural and right way to make soap.
